Ok, in our garden, there's a little sparrow's nest, and the chicks are starting to come out. I guess they'd be considerred fledgling (I don't know, I'm pretty ignorant). Well, they are obviously not flying just yet, but one of the babies got caught down our window well. He seems ok, but I don't know what to do about it. Do you think the mother bird will keep feeding them, or is it that time when the babies start to be independant and won't receive help from the mother? I'm not sure whether I should actually try and get the baby out or just leave him and hope the mother takes care of him.

The experts usually say to leave them alone, as the mother will feed them, but I suppose that depends on whether or not the mother can get to it to feed it.

I would also be worried that it might hurt itself trying to get out.
Not quite sure what you mean by 'window well'.
I take it that you can't reach the nest to put the baby back.

On a positive note, I have seen 'families' of sparrows in my yard, the young ones flying in and the mothers feeding them.

So if the mother sparrows are still feeding when the young ones are flying, then, provided 'your' mother sparrow can get to and from her baby easily, then I would imagined she will feed it.

If it is in your window well, you will be able to keep an eye on it. If you don't see the mother feeding it, I suppose you could always give it something yourself when the mother is not around. Do be careful of going too near the baby if the mother is around, or she might abandon it.

That's about the best I can do I'm afraid. I suppose the only other suggestion would be to contact the RSPCA and see what they say.

Hope it all works out well.

I would also advise calling a vet and asking them. I think as long as you handle it with gloves the mother will still feed it.

Ok, I got the one out of the window...but the other one looked ill, and soon died :(
When I got the baby out, he scurried off--he seemed healthy, and honestly he was nearly flying anyway, he just couldn't get far enough off the ground to escape himself. Thanks for the advice! Later, I saw the mother bird about. I think they'll be ok, thankfully.

Actually birds have a really bad sense of smell, you can touch it as much as you like. The idea of birds smelling you on their babies and abandoning them is a really common myth
