Council Member Lappin Endorses Humane Education
Council Member Jessica Lappin, whom LOHV-NYC endorsed for election in 2005, has written a wonderful letter in support of humane education.
In the letter, Jessica writes that she is pleased to support our friends at HEART (Humane Education Advocates Reaching Teachers) and the “valuable education programs they organize and have directed at New York City students.”
Jessica continues: “In the world we live and the challenges that our youth face, it is imperative that we teach and exhibit to them the qualities of honesty, integrity and kindness. … I offer my support and sincere thanks to HEART as [they] work to nurture and cultivate this city’s most valuable treasure, our children.”
This letter is most welcome and sure to open up school doors for humane education programs like HEART in the 5th council district (Upper East Side) which Jessica represents.
In related news, Jessica has also signed on as a co-sponsor of Council Member Tony Avella’s pets in housing bill, Intro. 13, which would prevent landlords from reviving waived no-pet clauses in rental tenants’ leases.
Educators and Upper East Siders: please thank Jessica for her support of humane education and legislation: (212) 535-5554!
Enough’s Enough – 3rd Horse-Drawn
Carriage Accident of the Year
The Horses Can’t Take it Anymore!
5 May, 2006 - Wild West Side Horse Crash - a carriage horse from Shamrock Stable got spooked by loud traffic noises at 46th and 11th Ave., ran wild and crashed into a car while still attached to his cab, which fell on its side. Conflicting information about horse being injured; car's driver was hospitalized.
28 April, 2006 - a spooked horse ran wild in Central Park crashing into a 71 year old bicyclist who was seriously injured and suffered a broken hip.
3 January 2006 - HORSE BOLTS & INJURES 3 IN MIDTOWN “A spooked horse bolted on a midtown street ..., ejecting the driver of the carriage..., then galloping straight into a station wagon...” at Ninth Avenue and 50 St. Three people were hospitalized, one critically. “The horse was pinned under the car...” and was later euthanized. Daily News, Jan. 3, 2006, p. 6 (It took the police and fire dept. ˝ hour to extricate the horse from under the car.)
How much longer much the public’s safety be jeopardized? How much longer must these horses be forced to co-exist with traffic?
Will another horse, or even a human being, have to die before the City Council deals with this situation?
Please call your Council Member again to update him or her re: the latest accident. Ask that he or she sponsor legislation to ban horse-drawn carriages in New York City. To find out who your Council Member is, visit www.humanenyc.org or call (212) 889-0303. Don’t forget to fill us in on the details of your correspondence.
