View Full Version : Help me my hands are orange
For the past month I've been drinking fresh carrot and kale juice. 8 baby carrots and 4 big leaves of kale in each juice. I read eating too much vitamin A from foods like those will result in your body to store the excess. I didn't think only that much would cause it! Does anyone know if my hands will keep getting more and more orange? I noticed my feet also look more orange. Does it just stop at those things?? I don't want to turn into a carrot! Anyone here have the same problem?
:help:

Don't  anymore!
Actually there's no need. OK you're turning orange. I am orange! Lately one of my colleagues suspected a liver disease (hepatitis), but it's beta-caroteens and they're harmless, actually they're supposed to scavenge free radicals. Babies are ofter orange and are they unhealthy - NO! And excess of beta-caroteens aren't converted to vitamin A. You won't get a hypervitaminosis A!
:vebo:
Phew! Thanks Lothar!! At least knowing it's harmless is enough to relax my nerves. Last thing I want is to bring disease to myself and give my non-veggie eating friends the final laugh. Now I just need to find women who like orange men... :D

my mom tried to quit smoking years ago by munching carrot sticks when she had a craving, hoping the hand-to-mouth motion would help. i guess she had a lot of cravings cause her skin went orange after a couple days of carrying carrotsticks around with her 24/7
i wouldn't worry about it. maybe drinking more water might help to flush it out?

When I was a baby and going through a sweet potato faze, my nose turned orange. My mom freaked and took me to the hospital, but yeah, it was just all the vitamin A. She backed off the Gerber and I turned out just fine. I'd recommend that you do the same if you don't like your digits to be orange, and you'll be fine too. :)
I eat a lot of carrots, and my skin has a very orange tint, although I don't exactly look like a carrot - yet. However, I don't mind. After all,
<<------ I'm going to marry a carrot! :p

Beta-carotene is stored just under the skin in layers of fat. This is what causes the yellowing (or oranging) of the skin. It is not harmful because beta-carotene is not converted efficiently into vitamin A, so it's unlikely that you will or are suffering from vitamin A toxicity.

Because beta-carotene is fat soluable, drinking water won't flush it out. The only way to rid herself of the orangness is to stop consuming so much beta-carotene. Her body would then have time to catch up on it's beta-carotene conversion, causing the orangness to fade with time.

With certain bone diseases surgeons inject methylene blue to detect bone regions which don't get blood supply and have to be resected. During the operation the patient turns blue and afterwards green (blue of the dye and yellow of the caroteens). The guy I saw looked like a marsian. So don't feel bad about turning orange. It's also preveting the skin from getting UV associated diseases like skin cancer.
:)
Preventing the skin from getting UV associated diseases?? That's the best news I've heard in a long time! I slowed down my carrot consumption and my hands are returning to normal. Going to try bringing it back up and find the sweet spot where I won't look too orange but still reap the benefits.
It's called "hypercartonemia". I get it myself periodically. It's a benign condition and nothing really to be concerned about. It just means you're getting an excessive amount of carotenes, the precursers to Vitamin A, than your body needs and it's storing it. Too much Vitamin A can be toxic, (but not the precursers) and recent studies are showing it as a risk factor for fractures.
While it's a benign condition, it is a sign you're getting excess of something your body can't use.
When I get that way I just back off on what I think it is cultprit. Usually it's carrots, pumpkin or some green leafy. Why have too much of something in my body.
I applaud you for your efforts, but maybe you need more variety, rather than eating the same concoction daily. Maybe every other day and every other day something different like beets (which has the pleasant side effect of turning your pee red.)
Variety is something I tend to overlook. I can go forever on the same food and enjoy it like it was the first time. I'll give beets a try on my next grocery run and see how the red pee goes :)

I've read a lot of recommendations for people to try one veggie or another for various reasons, but never... NEVER have I read someone recommending beets for a "red pee" side effect. That's a new one to me for sure.
If you get beets that have the green tops on them, the tops are edible, too (but AFAIK, they don't do anything to your pee).

My dad was looking orange after consuming nothing but carrots wrapped in a slice of cheese for a few monthes.
He stopped doing that and returned to normal.
The Dr. told me not to get worried unless the whites of my eyes became some color other than white.
