Kan. Sheriff Defends Shooting Ostrich

COLBY, Kan. (AP) - A western Kansas sheriff is defending his decision to order a deputy to kill an ostrich that had wandered onto Interstate 70 near Colby, despite protests from a truck driver who called the shooting "inhumane and senseless."

Thomas County Sheriff Mike Baughn said he ordered a deputy to shoot the 6-foot-tall exotic bird Thursday morning because it presented a hazard to passing motorists.

"It's like anything else on I-70," he said. "Once you take the legs out from under it, it becomes a missile."

Baughn said he doesn't know where it came from because owners rarely register the birds.

He said it's the first ostrich his office has destroyed, although it has killed about 10 emus over the past decade.

What Baughn called a matter of public safety has drawn criticism, though, from a Salina truck driver who witnessed the shooting.

Dennis Espinosa was driving by when he saw the bird spread its wings and the deputy pull the trigger on a 12-gauge shotgun.

"I think the deputy ought to be reprimanded," Espinosa said. "In my opinion, that was not just a chicken or a small bird. It was somebody's big bird."

It probably came from a farm or something.

So if some crazy person who was stoned of his mind wandered into traffic and presented a hazard, would this sheriff order that guy killed, too? Of course not. But as long as the "hazard" is not human, it's fair game for slaughter.

Something is seriously wrong with society.

"This wasn't JUST a chicken"

Cause a chicken would be ok to shoot?

No, a chicken would be roadkill.

That reminds me of the time a Rottie wandered into a kid's soccar game and stole the ball (playfully). The solution: two off duty cops lured it into the woods and shot it. In earshot of the children.

And cops wonder why most people have a bad attitide towards them.

Hm...that sucks, but let's take the cop debate to another thread.

The "it's like anything else" argument by the officer seems unlikely. If it had been a dog or a cat, I doubt they would've killed him.

Cats are probably small enough they wouldn't have, it wouldn't surprise me if they shot a large dog though.

This makes me really sad and upset. How senseless. :(

I hate when people do stuff like that. It really is apalling.
