I'm talking about exotic ones or simply ones that "tend" to get downshadowed by the apples, grapes, oranges, etc.

I tried an Asian pear for the first time today and I loved it!!!

I've had mangos and love those too...any exotic or "different" fruits that you guys love and/or recommend?

:pibo:

ps. fitting smiley, no?

Durian, jackfruit, mamey sapote, sapodilla, black sapote (also the chocolate pudding fruit), pomegranate, guava. Durian is definitely my favorite, by mamey sapote, mango, and jackfruit all tie for a close second!

Asian pear, mangosteen, jackfruit, jaboticaba, acerola, maná, atemoya, cupuaçu, guava (white variety), uchuva, guaraná, cashew fruit, soursop, passion fruit, feijoa... I guess many of these are pretty hard to find if you're not here in Brazil, though.:p

Bah! I had to LOOK UP half of Randy's... :brood:

MMmmm, however, I do love several of the ones listed above, like jackfruit, cherimoyas, lychees and rambutans...

A couple others no ones mentioned yet, though I can't say these are my "favorite" because I think I've only had them once or twice, but they were good...

Peanutbutter Fruit, Granidillas, Water Apples and Bacuriparo (which, from the description, I think are just basically a varitey of mangosteen).

QUESTION: Where do you find your "tropical" or exotic fruits if you don't live in an area where they grow native?

I have to venture into ethnic markets... (often times very VERY ethnic markets where nothing is written in English), so I sometimes have boughten fruits that I have NO idea what they are and have to go home and cross-reference the name in whatever language on the Internet...

Are most of these just available in regular supermarkets in other parts of the US?

I think you can get some of these in regular grocery stores here in Houston. I've seen Asian pears, mangoes, papayas, passionfruit, plantains, pomegranates, and starfruit in my local grocery, and the one that's yellow-orange with pointy spikes all around (dunno what that is), but I've never heard of half these things! I think you can also get canned lychees pretty easily, but not fresh.

Tess, I can get all the ones you mentioned, and more actually, at supermarkets around here too... some of the others are ones I have to go on wild adventures to find however...

Peanutbutter Fruit is a small little brown fruit that doesn't taste like Peanut Butter at all, it's sort of dry and sticky like a huge prune - though I just Googled it and all the Google entries say it DOES taste a bit like peanut butter... so yeah, whatever! (I thought it might, which is why I was curious enough to try it... but to me it doesn't.)

Lilikoi! My parents in Kailua have some growing in their backyard. They'd always yell at me when I'd eat the seeds so I had to practice sucking the stuff off the seeds and spit them out. Sour little things, but a nice change of pace form the usual fruit.

Can anyone help me ID a fruit I tried once in SW China? It looked a bit like a mango on the outside, but was actually quite hard. When sliced into, it revealed a deep-orange, non-juicy flesh that had the silky texture of hard-boiled egg yolk, and a mild sweet flavour. It also had a round pit like an avocado. I don't remember the Chinese name, and nobody I've asked at home has ever heard of it...

Where do you guys get all these exotic fruits? I would like to try them! From what I heard lychee and guava are the best-tasting.

Most of the fruits are only available during their season since they're not as popular like pommegranates. I've personally only seen lychee and guava sold in Hawaii. You might be able to get guava juice at a grocery store or lychee-flavored candy in asian markets in the States.
