ALERT: INDUSTRY SNEAK ATTACK ON ORGANIC STANDARDS- USDA ANNOUNCES BRIEF PUBLIC COMMENT PERIOD

The USDA has announced a very short public comment period (ends May 12, 2006) on a proposal to amend the National Organic Program (read the proposal here) in a manner that would weaken organic standards. The USDA's actions were requested by a very small handful of Republican members of Congress. Take action now and tell the USDA you support strong organic standards!

Sounds like we need a private organization run by hippies to make organic standards instead of politicians.

The annoying thing is organic has become such big business people are getting into it to make money, not because they want to grow safe wholesome food (like the original small organic producers did), and because they want it to be easier, they want to change the standards.

So many of us wanted more food to be grown organic, but the way it's going, we won't even know what "organic" means.

This makes me so **** mad! Just when people are starting to realize the reality of how food is grown and processed, and the importance of organics, it has to be undermined by greed!! It's hard enough when people do finally come around and warm up to paying more for organic (in some cases), if the standards are lessened, they're just going think organic is BS (which it would be), and go back to conventional.:wall:

Yes, we've been through all this nonsense a few times already, I think it comes up every year or so.

Guess we just have to grow our own food (which is what I'm trying to do anyway).
