View Full Version : Cats not using litter boxes...

My cats have always been really good about their litter boxes. Well, one of them recently had babies, and moved them into the "litter box room", and mama cat kept the others out of there, so I moved the boxes, but at least one of the other cats has been urinating all over the house (in the laundry, on a towel that fell on the bathroom floor and on the dog bed-which all are pretty far away from the boxes) as well as pooped in front of the fridge twice. Also, whoever is doing that has gone by the back door a few times-which the litter boxes are now by the back door. I have 3 litter boxes (1 for mama cat and the kittens, 2 for everyone) they're all kept very clean (scooped at least a couple times a day, washed & get fresh litter once a week or more often if needed) so I don't understand it. It has never been an issue before. I'm not sure what else to do but keep moving the boxes (which there aren't many options to put them) I've been making sure to not leave laundry baskets of clothes out, and checking for dropped towels, etc... I'm sick of cleaning up their messes and having to throw stuff away. Any advice/suggestions? I'm worried they might start going on the rugs or on furniture. Should I be moving the kittens instead of the boxes(they're about 7 weeks old)?
Move the kittens and put the boxes back were they belong, you also need to get an enzyme cleaner for the soiled area's.
Your cats are effectivlytelling you that they are very upset with you.
Best thing to do when you bring in new kittens or have them is move them to an area were your cats spend the least amount of thier time and it is not an area they need for anythign essential like litter boxes.
Mama cats can be highly territoral and will drive all others away.
I would definatly move the kittens. That might solve the problem by itself but if not, or if you just want to be really sure, you could retrain.
Here's how:
If you see any of your cats looking like they might go somewhere other than in the litter boxes pick them up quick and deposit them into their box, signs are sniffing around or scratching. Then if they use the box, be waiting with lots of praise and a small treat for when they're finished. Also if you hear scratching in the box, quickly grab a treat then wait until they're done and give it to them, again with lots of praise.
Even though they were good with the boxes before, more positive reinfocement won't hurt. This method worked really well for me with our cat. It took about a week and the problem was sorted. You don't have to reinforce every time either, intermitent reinforcement works best, which means that you don't have to stay home for a week to do it.
I recently bought the book Think like a cat by Pam Johnson Bennett (Who also wrote cat vs. cat about cats getting along together). She gives tons of advice about what kinds of things stress out cats and how to deal with them. She give strategies for reducing stress and recommends Feliway (spray pheromones) which my SO recently used on his 3-day trip with his cat and it really helped to calm her nerves.
I highly recommend anti-icky poo (AIP) for stain and smell removal. It's worked when all other enzyme products have failed.

I've heard it's the best for a long time, but never shelled out the money for it because it's so much more than the others. Maybe I'll go on ebay and get some.

One word: Feliway
Get some, add vinegar to your list and natures miracle enxyme cleaner.
Move the kittens and the mama (and fer gods sakes get her spayed!) then put the litterboxes back. Cats, like pigs only like going potty in ONE place it is virtually an all out WAR to get them to go potty in another space with no redirection.
But Feliway and a sprinkle of all natural vegan baby powder on the cats and kittens hiney's should help everyone get acclimated.
Good luck!

Thank you all for the advice. I'm kitty proofing a room to put the kittens in. I just hope mama cat will approve. I guess I'll lock them in there off and on until they get used to it. And (fer gods sake, lol) mama cat is getting spayed asap. (long story as to why she wasn't...I explained all that in a different post) Anyway, I'll do that and hope the others(or other?) starts using the litter box properly. Thanx again!

Not including the kittens, how many cats do you have? You ought to have one more litter box than you have cats. It may also help to put a box anywhere the cat is going inappropriately more than once since that seems to be favourite spot.

5 cats, usually only 2 large litter boxes (scooped at least twice a day...plus during the nice weather they're indoor/outdoor...winter they're scooped/changed more) They never got stinky (except right after one would drop a load in it) and they'd always jump right in them and go for it. I don't think I have room for 6 litter boxes, but this weekend I think I'm gonna at least grab a 3rd. And again, it wasn't a problem at all until the kittens were moved there. Yesterday I moved them to another room, and so far so good, but I'll have to wait a few more days to make sure the other cats keep going where they're suppossed to. They only had "accidents" every couple of days or so. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for no more accidents.
