View Full Version : Disney Loses Its Appetite for Happy Meal Tie-Ins

As more children lean toward obesity, Mickey and Co. lean away from McDonald's fast food.
For 10 years, Walt Disney Co. and McDonald's appeared to have the perfect marriage. Happy Meals bore little figurines of Nemo, Mr. Incredible and 101 Dalmatians.
But no more. This is one relationship that's ending in part because of the children.
Disney is not renewing its cross-promotional pact with the fast-food giant, ending the arrangement with this summer's release of "Cars" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." One reason, say multiple high-ranking sources within Disney, is that the company — which prides itself on being family friendly — wants to distance itself from fast food and its links to the epidemic of childhood obesity.

I'm glad to hear this because it does make a loud statement and may provoke parents to think about the unhealthy choices they are making for their children. Although I believe McDonalds is horrible and I do not even consider it to be food, the parents are to blame for their choices, not Happy Meals, Disney or Toys. If we don't want our babies to drown, we fence off the pool! So, while it's a great decision on Disney's part, it is no substitution for careing and intelligent parenting. Heck, if I could make it happen with a snap of my fingers, all fast food would disappear. But the best I can do is make sure my family doesn't touch it. And they don't. My little guy calls McDonalds, McDiarrhea. Teach them and they will learn....

Yes, that is really good news. I agree, when something that big happens, it's likely to get people thinking. Hooray for Disney!:hump:

That's terrific. No kid should eat fast food IMHO.
this doesnt phase me very much concidering most of those toys were made in sweatshops by children.
Buuuuuut....this would mean that less of them will be made, yes?

*grumbles* mucking up the ending of the little mermaid *grumbles*

yes, thats all good, but still what kind of message is that?
"they can work their little fingers off, but oh god dont let them be fat!"
heartless.
plus, even though less mcdonalds toys will be made, theres still tons of things they sell at disneyland that are still made in sweatshops. it's kind of hypocritical.

Spaz, where'd you read that they use child labor?
Anyways, that's great about Disney cutting ties with McDonalds.
/wonders if the real reason is that Burger King made a better offer. :p

I know that fact is talked about in "Fast Food Nation"..
Hmm, finally something that Disney is doing right..:tired:
Yeah..I remember reading that in Fast Food Nation and thinking about how many of those toys are discarded/broken within like 5 minutes of purchase. What a waste.
Spaz...I agree that sweatshop labor (I'd not heard that about the toys) is horrible, but I don't think it's needs to be an either or thing. That is, we can rejoice that (maybe..I have doubts), this will end some of the rush of parents to McDonalds, and still be pissed that Disney uses unethical labor practices.
