i have a general question/rant...
i love my dear husband but i do not agree with his point of veiw...
he is a natural bodybuilder and competes in shows...he is also a chiropractor and has his masters in clinical nutrition...so he knows a lot more than i do about nutrition...
but...its my body and i know what makes it happy..
i am a vegetarian and it really pisses him off..it is the only thing we have ever argued about in our entire marriage, he demands that i eat fish at least 3 times per week...i don't want to...
my only source of protein is from dairy...yogurt, some cheese and whey protein powder shakes...
i know dairy isnt the greatest but i am allergic to nuts and soy...and beans hurt  so i am a little limited... my question is, can whey be your main source of protein? i tollerate it very well and it gives me no stomach problems or allergies...can i still lift weights? my husband says there is no point if i don't eat meat...
i was hoping someone had a good response to get him off my back about it...
thanks for reading!

1. he can't "demand" you eat meat. what is this BS? eat what you want, woman! don't let him tell you what to do.
2. I train 5-6 days a week and I am vegan.in fact, there are a bunch of vegan people here that are either bodybuilders or fitness people, and we all seem to be alive and well.
3. if you can't do soy, what about seitan/wheat meats?? I am currently addicted.

thanks for getting back to me so quick...
i know he can demand all he wants but i always do what feels right...my favorite comeback is I DO WHAT I WANT! in an eric cartman type voice....i have always been contrary... i haven't eaten any fish yet! i just wanted to do more weight lifting and i wasn't sure if my selective diet would allow it...how many grams of protein would you recomend? i am 5'5 and 135 lb female and i am genetically predisposed to gaining muscle quick (fat too!:stinkeye: ) on the bottom...thanks for your input

the general rcommendation is 10-20% of your calories should come from protein. so it depends on how many calories you eat.
you have to see after you start training heavy if your body needs more. for me, when I was at the low end -10%- I don't recover quick enough- but I know their are a lot of raw bodybuilders who are on 10% and fine, but they also eat a lot of calories overall and I think thats important to.
I ususally end up between 25-35%, but again, that's me. you have to tweak your diet according to how your body reacts, not anyone elses.

1. i lifted weights as both a vegan and vegetarian and it's been fine.
2. i've never used protien powder and i've always been strong, flexible, and fit.
3. you get more than enough protien from dairy products (and eggs if you consume them). you do not need fish.
4. my husband is also a body builder (natural) and an omnivore. he and i never argue about this topic. he doesn't think that i need to eat meat. he knows that i'm healthy.
5. many vegetarians are into fitness and lifting weights. many of them do not use protien powder either.

I doubt that's true unless you have an extremely limited diet. Do you eat grains? Grains have a considerable amount of protein. Oatmeal is a good source of protein for a grain.
And what do you mean by beans hurt? If you are concerned about gas there are some types of beans that are less gas producing. Anasazi beans are simular to pinto beans but produce a lot less gas. You can find them in health foods stores. Lentils produce less gas and they can be found just about anywhere. Adzuki beans produce less gas and you can find them in Asain stores or health foods stores. The Chinese call them red beans so they are often labled that way. They are small in size.

Oh, and since you're not eating fish you should make sure you get omega-3 somehow. Some vegetarian sources are: flaxseed, flax oil, walnuts (if you can eat them) and DHA capsules (with DHA derived from algae).

Whey can absolutely be a good source of protein. It is a complete protein and a lot of bodybuilders swear by it.
My only objections would be that it comes from an animal and that I am currently reading that there's strong evidence large amounts of animal proteins and fats lead up to the health problems common to meat-eating populations like the US and UK.
