Ok, so, here i am today, rearranging my furniture and cleaning up my house, preparing for my rennovations. And in going through one of my rooms, i discovered no less than 6 good sized pots. I also have a number of metal tubs.

I have put off trying permaculture stuff because the neighborhood association sprays outside. it's near constant that they spray! arghhh! makes me nuts. Anyway, i have this lovely 'window seat' scenario which i could make look more like a seat or i can use a few pots to make a little indoor herb garden.

I have the pots--looks like i'll start with 6 pots, about 12 inches in diameter at the top. What should i compile? how do i start my pots? and should i buy 'little plants' of herbs or should i start from seed? i'm thinking 'little plants.'

and how do i deter the ever-clever october j rabbit from following his happy nose to delicious herbal treats? :)

thankies!

PS. if i am thinking of taking an herbalism course (correspondence) and they have suggestions for herbs, but i'm happy to take more! :D

Are you looking to grow medicinal herbs? Or culinary herbs? Or a little of both? (most culinary herbs are also considered medicinal anyway)

It's sometimes hard to find little plants of uncommon varieties, so you may need to start some from seed if you want rare kinds. But most common kinds are available as plants from somewhere. If you need help with sourcing I'd be happy to lend a hand. :)

cool.

i'm thinking of doing a bit of both, and working with something like lavendar so that i can learn how to glean the essential oil and use it in my various 'products.' for july, i'm learning how to make home made deoderant, soap (to be made into body soap and shampoo), conditioner and lotions, and toothpaste. i can buy most of the stuff that i need now (such as essential oils and tincture of myrruh), but i think it would be awesome to grow some of my own herbs for cooking, for making these products, and for learning basic first aid.

i do need to buy a rather large aloe plant, but i might have to buy one that's already in a large container, so i don't think that's going to change anything much. :)

If you're going to try lavender inside, you'll need to make sure it gets maximum sun exposure, because it prefers full sun even outside, except in extremely hot sunny climates. Most herbs do like a lot of light, though not necessarily a lot of heat. Aloe seems to do okay without a whole lot of light, though it gets spindly and weak eventually.

If you having a roving bunny, I think you'll need to put up an actual indoor fence (like a playpen) to contain the plant area and keep bunny away, since some herbs might not be good for him in quantity.

Are there any specific conditions you hope to treat with herbs?

not specificly at this time. the herbalism course that i'm looking to take has the 'home first aid kit' and then things for common colds and the like. pretty basic stuff.

we'll see. :) i have to figure out when and how yet. ;)
