View Full Version : Leave pit bulls alone
I have been reading though the topics on pitbulls on the forum, and I am amazed that their are people on this forum that believe pit bulls are more dangeous and aggressive , the people that believe this have been brain washed by politictions and the media, I'm not gonna go in to all the reasons on why they are no different from other dog breeds because there is so much evidence, even veterinarians state that pit bulls are no more aggressive, in fact they say that the dogs like jack russels are more aggressive.
Just can't believe that these people are supposed to care and understand animals, but yet they discriminate against these breeds.
Do you think pit bulls should be banned.

I think I'll take my chances against an aggressive ankle biter over an aggressive pit bull any day. :p
Other than that, well yeah I agree. Not sure we need to start this debate yet again though.
Yeah, that'd be them 'opinion' things.

I beleive that there are people out there who train their pit bulls to be nasty dogs. I also know that, usually, I won't be able to tell which ones will try to go at me if I get too close. So, yes, I'm afraid of them. But I'm afraid of all big dogs.
I don't think a dog should be banned just for being a pit bull, but I think people need to be looked over more somehow before buying a dog. Maybe needing a licence or something. Don't they do that in China?

If it's staring at you with it's tail standing straight up and motionless, well that's not a good sign. If it's wagging it's tail and bouncing around, that's a friendly sign.
Pit bulls are nice dogs I went to the pound the other day and there were 3 pit bulls and all three of them were sweet, they were wagging their tails and jumping up on the wire, and I had no problem sticking my hand in and patting them.
I asked the lady if they were adoptable and she said no because they are pitbulls.:furious:
I think people should have to take a course to teach them how to properly care for their animals, hopefully this would stop people from just dumping their dogs.
Maybe needing a licence or something. Don't they do that in China?
In New Zealand you need a license to own a dog, and I think you even have to pay an annual fee to have your dog relicensed every year - just like your car. The problem of course is that the people who have dangerous dogs are the people who don't license them, so in the end it just penalises those people who are responsible dog owners.

Man that is weird. I have a pit bull! She is the biggest baby! She runs away from lightening, the doorbell but the one time a big man tried to pull me towards his car as a kid she was ready to decapitate the guy. They are not mean they are defensive of their owners.

I also have a gentle giant pittie
People who think pitties are a bad breed have indeed been brainwashed by the media. It's sad.
As the saying goes, there are no bad dogs, just bad dog parents.

This comment always cracks me up - really. IF a pitbull and a Jack Russell were both to attack, which one would do the greater damage?
I have met some sweet Pitbulls but would I leave my kids in a yard with any? - nope and if that makes me one of "those brainwashed people" too bad - my childrens well being overtakes anybodies opinion...
OH and FYI - I have 3 dogs so it's not like I am paranoid about them
In England, Bull terriers are known as Nanny dogs because they are excellent with children, will protect them to the death, and can tolerate a child being rough with them without feeling any pain.
There is no such thing as an aggressive breed, only ignorrant owners.
i believe there are no mean dogs, just bad people who make them mean.
but im still wary of pit bulls or german shepards, my mom got bit in the face by a german shepard when she was little and i had one bite me in the arm.
pit bulls dont scare me, they really dont, just id never EVER get near one that was stray/owner not present.
you have no idea what they've been tought and they might just decide to attack you from their training, that can happen with all dogs, but since everyone is convinced that they should have pit bulls as gaurd dogs and etc, its more likely
ive had one before, she was a sweetheart, all the ones my friends have are really sweet too. i dont hold fear for the breed, just ignorant owners who want to make their dogs mean.

So if you raise 2 dogs the same way they'll have the same personality?

My point wasn't which one would do the greater damage, it was that people fear getting attacked by pit bulls, when in fact you should fear getting attacked by jack russels more since they are more aggressive. If your going to say, which one would do greater damage, a pit bull or a jack russel, then why don't we just ban all the bigger dogs since they can cause greater damage, even though small dogs can be quite dangeous, like a pomeranian who attacked and killed a 8 week old baby.
Yes you have been brainwashed because you would fear leaving pit bulls with your kids, if you didn't listen to what's said in the media, then you would know that pit bulls are amongst the best with people, especially with kids and that Pit bulls actually rate higher in temperament than golden retrievers as a breed.
So do some research and you'll see they're a great dog breed.

I merged your two pit bull threads.

Wow, sure twisted that statement to fit your means...

Of course not. They can have different personalities and not be mean, though.
I'm not wary of a pitbull if I'm walking alone. In fact, I really love pitties. They're huge loves who just lean on your legs and gaze up at you adoringinly if you give them a scratch behind the ears.
If I'm with my dog, however, it's another story. It is a simple fact that pits were bred for dog (NOT human) aggression. My dog has been bitten by a pit bull and has been lunged at by several pit bulls. He's also been lunged at by ankle biters, but I'm not terribly concerned that they're going to do him much damage. All of the times he's been nearly attacked, BTW, were on leash. My dog is very well-trained and friendly and we will cross the street to avoid pits if they're giving us a hard stare. It can be very difficult, however, when these dogs are off-leash or on 30 foot leads (as was the one that came within 2 feet of attacking my dog yesterday).
Anyway, I think that part of being a responsible pit bull owner is to accept the fact that it is likely your dog is NOT meant to be romping free with a bunch of other unknown dogs. Yes, bad owners make bad dogs. But dogs also have pre-dispositions when it comes to temperment. Not every dog in the world is dog park material. This doesn't make them bad dogs, but it DOES mean that their owners have to respect their dogs by not forcing them into situations that are overly stressful. The fact is that not all dogs need or even want to play with other dogs. It's often the owners who care far more about "doggy play dates" and who think that socializing a dog requires lots of uncontrolled play.

Actually, they were breed for bull and bear baiting as were bull dogs. Any dog can be aggressive to another dog.

Look, these are MY kids and it's not going to happen.
Ducati, that's very true. But the fact remains that dog aggression has been encouraged in pit bull breeding for many generations. Would you deny that a pit bull is more likely to be dog aggressive than, say, a golden retriever? Yes, I know that some golden retrievers are aggressive, and some pit bulls are canine social butterflies, but I'm not talking about individual dogs. I'm talking about the breed as a whole.
Some dogs are just more prone to dog aggressive; bully breeds, chows and jack russells, for example. My dog, a chesapeake bay retriever, is more likely to be dog aggressive than a lab. He isn't, and I'm met labs who are, but that doesn't change the fact than chessies are in general more prone to dog aggression than labs.
If my dog ever became dog aggressive, he would no longer run free in dog parks and he certainly wouldn't be on a long lead in public areas. My point is just that owners have to be sensitive to their dog's needs. My boy has played very nicely with a staffy on several occasions. This dog is obviously ok in this sort of situation. Great. But dogs that DON'T do well with other dogs should be more tightly controlled, and people with breeds who are prone to dog aggression should be highly sensitive to their dog's behaviour, IMO.
Cheers!

No, I don't think Bull Terriers are any more aggressive than any other dog can be. I think that their power and agility is what certain people who want aggressive dogs seek. They allow and encourage the dog to be aggressive. If they can control it, that is fine. However, too many people who cannot control it have these various breeds which give the breed a bad name.
