Is oat bran raw? I know oat meal is steamed, but I didn't know if they did the same for the bran. I'm sproutng many grains and am planning on a few recipes. I made sprouted tabouli last night! Also, what do you think of bragg's liquid aminos? Is it too salty?
Well, I thought we could make a thread of questionable raw foods to help anybody in doubt.:D

Bragg's and Nama Shoyu as well as even unpasteurized miso are not raw.

Oat bran is not raw.

Many spices and oils are not raw.

Most dried fruits and nuts are not raw.

Wow, bragg's was even used in a recipe book that I bought. Are steel cut oats raw, or are those steamed, too. Is there anything else I should be aware of?

Yeah, Bragg's is commonly used and called "raw" even when it is not. Then again, some people eat all sorts of things not veg or vegan and call themselves veg or vegan, so what can ya do?

Steel cut oats are not raw, unless you order them through a special place that guarantees the highest temperature used.

Why are dried fruits not raw?

Why are dried fruits not raw?

Because most of them are heated to enzyme destroying temperatures. The best way to ensure you are eating raw dried fruits is to dehydrate them yourself so you have complete control over the temperature.

Personally, I see no need for dried fruits. I eat whole fresh fruits myself. I mean with live in year 2006 so it is not like we can't go to the store an get fresh fruit when ever we want. Now, if you had your own fruit orchard and you wanted to live strictly off what you grow, then in that case you might dry some fruits so you have something to get you through the winter.

Hey all!

Like Samuel, I too don't eat dried fruits anymore...
Too much sugar goes inside the body too fast
It makes it much harder to lose weight
and... very addictive!

Another thing you should be aware of is frozen vegetables.
They are usually washed in hot water before they are frozen.

And try to buy shelled nuts because they usually heat the nuts in order to release the shell. And it makes your diet a lot healthier because this way it's time consuming to eat too many nuts.

:nana: Win/Win solution!! :nana:

Take care! All the best!

Samuel,
Thanks for explaining! You're right, dried fuits are not really necassary. I'd rather have a fresh one over the dried version any day.

How many of you eat sprouted grains? I'm trying to go on a high raw diet and I do eat bread that has sprouted grains and beans in it-is this okay?

Sure, it's okay! Is it raw? No, unless it's 'Essene' bread that isn't cooked. Are you talking about Ezekiel or Alvarado St. Bread? Those have yeast and are baked.

It's Ezekiel.
I think I'm going to try the Essene bread later on and just stick with Ezekiel for now.
