Got any numbers you would like to share with us, or are you just needing a place to vent? Either way, this is the place.

I found this online:

The following are the tigers that have not become extinct, however, are on the "endangered list". Siberian, Bengal, Sumatran, Indochinese, and South China tigers. There are 8 different kinds of tigers. Out of these, 3 are extinct, the Bali, Javan and the Caspian. These have vanished over the past 70 years.
FACT:
A tigers paw prints are called "pug marks".

Tigers are normally associated with the forests and grasslands in Asia, however, they also range from the tropical areas of the Far East, (India, Nepal, China), to the edge of the Artic Ocean (Siberia).

The South China tiger is close to becoming extinct. It is believed there are only 30 left in the wild. Siberian, Sumatran and Indochinese range in the hundreds, making the total population between 5,000 and 7,000 left in the wild, however, a hundred years ago, their count was 100,000 in existance.

Tragically, we can now add polar bears and even hippos and thousands of other species to the endangered list:
http://www.commondreams.org/headlines06/0501-07.htm

We're killing our fellow Earthlings and we're killing ourselves...

Yep, I agree. I know this doesn't sound nice but sometimes I think the human race should be wiped out then maybe nature can regain its natural rhythm. Or at least people should be forced, yes forced to live in harmony with nature. I know it sounds oppressive but finally things would even out. I wouldn't mind living in a grass or mud hut:D

I agree! The human race has gone too far, I feel so sad for the helpless animals who've had their world invaded and taken over! I hate knowing that others of our species are the ones doing harm physically to animals. Although we're all doing harm in one way or another

but there are certain types of people who are being wiped out which is also sad...it wasnt just the holocaust things like that are happening all over the world

Thanks - that would be interesting. Funny I read this discussion because I was reading a newsletter from PAWS sanctuary in California (www.pawsweb.org) who rescued 39 tigers from a pseudo-sanctuary - Tiger Rescue. Anyhoo, in this article they say that there are more tigers in private hands in the US - approx 10,000 - double the number of those in the wild in Asia. They go on to say that 90% of the privately owned tigers die within the 1st 2 years.

Until recently, there were eight (8) subspecies of Panthera tigris. The past couple of decades have witnessed the extinction of three subspecies, the Caspian, Bali and Javan tigers. Estimates to the five remaining subspecies in the wild and captivity respectively (1999) are as follows: Bengal 4000/1000, Indochinese 1050/20, Sumatran 400/194, Siberian 400/632, and Chinese 30/40.

There you go I found it finally. It comes from my job's website (http://www.phoenixzoo.org). Also some of you many notice that thre is no mention of the white tiger. The white tiger isn't actually a speices of tiger. It's a mutant or a tiger that's genes is very different from the other tigers. They are only breed with other white tigers which is inbreeding since there aren't too many around because they only live to be 4-6 years of age.
