This past Wednesday, the Chicago City Council made history and passed legislation, by a vote of 48-1, to ban the sale of foie gras within city limits! NYC should follow the lead.

As you may know, Foie gras, French for “fatty liver,” is produced by force-feeding ducks, by way of metal pipes shoved down their throats, until their livers become diseased. This delicacy of despair has been banned in numerous countries around the world. In 2004, California similarly enacted a ban on the sale and production of foie gras.

The New York Daily News reported today that we “shouldn’t “expect New York to follow the Windy City’s lead and ban the pricey delicacy.” We beg to differ. Brooklyn Council Member Simcha Felder can threaten to bring “chopped liver” to work every day if a ban is proposed but we know there are elected officials like Queens Council Member Peter Vallone, Jr. who wouldn’t touch the stuff with a 10-foot pole.

We know that Vallone, Jr. isn’t alone and that there are other compassionate Council Members opposed to this kind of abject cruelty. They just need to be encouraged to support a ban.

Please call/write your Council Member and urge him or her to follow the humane leadership of Chicago and support a ban on the sale of foie gras within city limits. To find out who your Council Member is, visit www.humanenyc.org or call (212) 889-0303.
