View Full Version : Can't Catch My Breath

I just went running, like 15 minutes ago, and naturally, I'm a bit winded. I walked for five minutes when I was done, slowly drank some water, sat up straight with my arms above my head, but I still feel like I can't breathe. I know I don't have asthma (I've been tested). What can I do for some immediate relief? I love running, but I can't stand this, and I kinda scares me. I keep coughing and stuff. This always happens, and I need it to stop.

Get to emergency! If it is asthma, you might need a breathing treatment.

Sounds a LOT like exercise induced asthma. In order for it to be properly diagnosed, it is best for you to be examined after the exercise.

Some things can make the condition worse - cold, dust, smoke, etc. I think I may have a mild version of it, but haven't been diagnosed. The only time it bothers me is when I try to go jogging on a cool day - so I avoid jogging when it is cold out. Is there something that triggers your breathlessness, or does it always happen?

Hasn't been back on. Can I worry just a little?

first, get checked by a doc asap.
if it proves to not be asthma you could be hyperventillating from not breathing properly throughout excercising. i've done this to myself biking. i thought i was going to pass out, i couldn't stop panting and the sweat was pouring off me like i've never seen before. i had to sit and drink and force myself to relax. my heartrate was too high, it was hot out, and i wasn't controlling my breathing properly.

so next time, keep track of your heartrate, if it starts to get too high slow down a bit. pay attention to your breathing. slow deep breaths in through the nose, hold, slowly out through the mouth. now if i go biking or work out and pay attention to my breathing i can keep going longer before i get tired, and i don't get out of breath.

you could also have poor lung capacity like me. when i had to do a test for a physical where you blow into a tube, they thought their machine was broken cause it was barely registering. i just have poor capacity, likely due to being raised around smokers. thanks mom. there are excercises you can do to increase your capacity. freeweights lying on your back on a weight bench. push up while exhaling, bring down, elbows as far back as possible, while inhaling. supposed to help a lot :)

Well, this is one of the worst allergy seasons on record, so that could definitely be affecting you. Were you running hard? I have mild exercise induced asthma and allergies, and whenever I race I have trouble breathing for like an hour or so after and then I cough like crazy for a few days. I don't think it's dangerous - just really annoying. I take the OTC version of Claritin, I also used to take a daily steroid inhaler but recently stopped because my track career is almost over (last race tomorrow!) and I didn't feel like getting a refill. But that might be something that could help you out - go to a pulmonologist and see if you can do one of those exercise/lung function tests.

Good luck, and don't give up on running!

Yes, guys, I'm fine! Thanks so much for your support though. I just had a really crappy day (some people on my speech team think it's funny that I cry when the mention dead horses, but, growing up with horses, I don't find it all that amusing) and it made me feel good to see that you guys cared! :) I went riding the other day, and took a pretty full dose of excersise, and I didn't get winded, and I walk a lot, too. This only seems to happen when I run. It doesn't even happen when I play sport or anything... just when I simply jog.

Young lady, this is MOM here. The next time you tell us you can't breathe, get back to us PDQ and tell us you're ok. You scared the bejeebers out of me.

One of the most nagging things here is, we care and there is generally no way to find out if someone is in a desperate situation or has, God forbid, died.

When you stop being tender hearted, something inside you has died. Stay alive inside, and don't worry about the duffuses.

Sorry! I know I should have updated earlier! Well, I'm okay now, and I think I'll just lay of running for a while.

Take a slower pace. Don't push yourself to go so fast and you won't get winded so quickly. Focus on your breathing rhythm, your steps, and a slower pace.

I usually breathe in & out on my left foot.

left, breathe in
right
left, breathe out
right
left, breathe in
right
left, breathe out

etc etc. That helps me from hyperventilating and getting a sideache. As soon as I veer from that pattern, something happens (sideache or something). Good luck.
