I read a number of threads here about getting enough protein when working out.... But
I have an injury so I am not working out now, but doing physical therapy. The therapist asked me today if I get enough protein. I know I get what I need for everyday living and maybe a little more. Do I need to eat additional protein for physical therapy? If so how much more? (I have a shoulder injury - The therapist knows I'm vegan- felt like she wants me to eat meat or dairy for additional protein.):wall:

I work out andpractice Mauy Thai kickboxing, so I am always injured in some way shape or form. currently I am nursing a pulled hamstring.

i recover best on 20 to 30% protein of my daily intake in calories, but I know of a lot of people who do fine on 10-20%. i eat few soy products or processed foods.

personally I think It's the amount of calories you take in- if you take in an extra 500 calories a day (which is what your body generally uses to heal from severe trauma like surgery) your protein will automatically go up. make yourself a rice protein shake with PB and banana each day for extra cals.

ETA: i am vegan too, and have been for a few years.

ETA again: a physical therapist is not a dietician BTW...

Thanks, I was kinda mad at her when I left today...
I am still debating if I want to go again next week.
No surgery - just torn and stretched muscles :(
She has already implied that I'm not going to be completly recoverd....

It's been close to three months since I injured my knee from bicycling. It wasn't healing so I am more careful about my protein intake because I too heard you need protein to heal. I've been having a soy protein drink every morning for breakfast. I feel at least I am paying attention to it and watching my protein intake. I don't really know if it helps me that much though.
