The 20th Anniversary Genesis Awards will be presented on the Animal Planet cable television channel on Saturday May 6, at 2 pm PT/5 pm ET. It will be a two hour program. Among the winners: the Oscar-nominated animated film Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, and an episode of CSI titled "Unbearable", about canned bear hunts. Just a reminder: The awards show is tomorrow, Saturday May 6th. "Check your local listings", PLEASE. I thought it would air at 2 pm in my area, but I just checked the onscreen guide on my TV to put a reminder on it, and it shows a start time of 5 pm instead. I'm glad I checked.

I watched it and I loved it. I just had one problem. During commercial time they showed a commercial from "takemefishing.org" or something like that. To me that sounds a bit strange to show during the show but also on animal planet at anytime. Anyway, great show.

Yeah, that bugged me, too. :(

I believe the consumptive users' current strategy may be that if they can't oust the Genesis Awards from the airwaves (and let's face it, it is one of the most consistently pro-animal protection things on TV) they can buy up airtime during the commercial breaks.
One year in which circus exposes were being honored, I remember reading that Ringling Bros. bought adtime during the awards to brag about how 'well' their animals live.

I finally watched it earlier this evening. I really, really enjoyed the show. Since I rarely watch TV these days, I hadn't heard of many of the news stories/programs/movies they mentioned. It was nice to see that the animals do have a voice. Positive change has been made for them because of these award recipients.

I believe the show is also useful for parents who wish to raise their children to be compassionate towards animals by letting them know which among the television programs and movies of the past year have that same compassionate message.

I agree. Since I don't watch much TV, I have no idea what compassionate movies are available for kids. I usually dismiss most movies for kids because of the callousness they tend to show toward animals. The Genesis Awards showed clips of quite a few I hadn't heard of that look promising.

Postscript:

"Duma" which was given the Genesis Award for Outstanding Family Feature film, is being released on DVD today.

Outstanding Family Feature Film

Duma

For a poignant story about a boy's relationship with an orphaned cheetah cub, and his growing awareness that he must (and he does) release the animal back into the wild where he belongs.

Thanks - I didn't watch it but someone I know taped it! One of last years winners is my HERO!! I love you Ron Kagan! BTW - His elephants went to PAWS Sanctuary in Calif. and are doing great.

While its purpose is to honor the work of media professionals, Genesis honors at least one newsmaker each year. This year's honoree, Dr. Ron Kagan of the Detroit Zoo, was recognized for his decision to send two aging elephants to a sanctuary in a warmer climate, without replacing them. "Elephants," Kagan remarked, "are the only animals for whom there is a disparity between what they need and what we can provide."

Kagan observed that the highly charged discussion that followed his announcement—ostensibly a debate over the fate of two elephants—was "really about zoos looking in the mirror," trying to do more and better for animals. "The human desire to collect creatures and be amused by them has not served animals well," Kagan said. Another award-winner, a local news feature by the San Francisco Bay area's KTVU-TV on elephant-training methods at Ringling Brothers, made the same point.
