Are there any nationwide (USA) vegan grocery stores? If not, what about grocery stores that you know have a really good vegan selection. I am currently a lacto-vegetarian but want to eventually go vegan.

Thanks!

Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and Trader Joe's can't be found everywhere, but they are the three biggest health food chains. While they sell plenty of meat and other animal products, they have a much bigger supply of vegan foods and health foods than the average grocery store.

My local Fred Meyers has a really good selection of vegan items (I'm quite far from TJs, Wild Oats and all those other health food chain stores).

Yeah, Fred Meyer is a local (Northwest) chain that has a fairly good selection of vegan items... I don't live near any of the "big name" fancy Health Food stores either....

I've had good luck going from store to store for the items I need - One store will have Silk and another will have Boca Burgers... however you don't "need" many or really ANY "specialty" vegan items to "be vegan".

If you're mainly buying whole, fresh, unprocessed foods - it's actually simple to be vegan and shop at most any good grocery store.

Wegman's has a lot of vegan options. Mine has an entire frozen/refridgerated aisle of vegan products, as well as a huge organics section. :hungry:

one of the local krogers (is it just in the midwest?) has an excellent vegan and organic food section. great prices too, you can always get silk for 2.75 a half gallon (sometimes on sale for 2.50) plus plenty of boca burgers and vegan fake meats.

Kroger is also around here in the south, and they have a great veg*n selection here too. Plus having a Kroger discout card helps too. :D

up in the northeast (mainly southern new England), Stop & Shop has a good amount of vegan options. Plenty of soymilks, Earth Balance and most importantly, half of an isle devoted to MAINLY vegetarian and vegan options! I was almost SHOCKED to see Toffuti "ice cream" and a bunch of flavors available!!!

=Fry's in AZ

you just have to look around though, because each individual store stocks according to their demographics and such...(not including, trader joes, whole foods, etc...)...if you have a specific product in mind, you can request the store stock it--i've done this twice, once they did/once they didn't...

good luck!

my local Kroger stocks an amazing selection of natural foods and organic produce. Part of it has to do with my area (Ohio University and the Surrounding town, a lot of us are for sustainable living and organic agriculture). I can get so much shopping at kroger and my local HFS combined... my mum and i have found that it is easier to shop at a bunch of stores, you just have to know what you're going into each store to buy once you have the hang of it, it's easy :)

This is the only way I find things too! And if you can remember what stores stock what, it IS easy...

The newer Publix stores in Georgia have excellent vegan, vegetarian, and organic selections. The new store near me has a special section on each aisle, so that everything is easily grouped together.

definitely
we go to the HFS for bulk gluten flour, bulk rice and ww pasta, as well as cocoa powder (bulK), and sometimes organic bananas and stuff like that

the normal grocery store for our rice and soy milk, bread, cereal, pasta sauces, fruits, and veggies

the asian market for our jarred roasted peppers, buckwheat groats, chickpeA flour, certain spices, tofu, and soy sauce..

it's pretty easy now that we know what we can find where for the least amount of money. :)

at least not in our area--se valley of phoenix area...There used to be one on Thomas Road. I want to say 20-something ave and Thomas or was it 20-something street & Thomas?

It also seems to me there was one in Tempe and one or two in Chandler, too but where they are, I couldn't tell you. :(

Kroger's is Smith's in Albuquerque and has a good selection. Albuquerque actually has a lot of places that carry a good variety of vegetarian specialty items and organic produce.

4evergrounded--
thanks for the link--i looked fast, but will have to look closer later...anyway, i'm confused--we've been here a little over a year and were told fry's was the same as kroger, in the midwest, which, according to this link is the same as fred meyer...anyway, i thought i was pretty familiar with the grocery stores, but can't think of a fred meyer--could it be that the link is listing stores owned by the same corporation? (and btw fry's are EVERYWHERE) i don't know--like, i said, i'll have to look more closely later...but thanks for the info, anyway...

anyway, my favorite stores are sunflower market and safeway...where did you shop when you lived here?

Yeah, you're right! A Whole Foods, three Wild Oats, two Co-Ops and a Trader Joes all in the same city... Geez! I need to move to Albuquerque!!

When I lived there, I liked Fry's a lot and Smith's when it was still here (they've shut all the Smith's in AZ). IMO, they had the biggest selection and the best prices of anyone in the valley. Safeway is pretty good, too (I LOVE their no-fat refried beans) but IMO, they're nothing like Fry's. The ironic thing is that my husband loves Safeway but isn't real keen on Freddies so we shop at both places to keep peace. :D

I'm in SC and shop at Publix alot. We just got a Whole Foods in Greenville so I am very excited! Now if I could just find a shampoo that doesn't leave my hair oily, life would be perfect!!!
