A lot of the newbies post here saying that they slipuped and felt so bad for it. So lets share ours to show that alot of people have them and you shouldnt dwell on them. Also, you may vent and rant here about slipups!

This happened to me recently. As of a week ago, I was eating sushi with "imitation crab meat" in it. I thought it was fake crab, like crab meat replacement. So a week ago I was eating at a Korean restaurant with a korean lady and some friends, when she ordered sushi for the table to share. I was going to eat one when she said "oh thats not vegetarian." I replied that the crab meat was fake and then she told me that imitation crab meat was made out of fish. :dunce: :furious:
Hmm...years ago I was eating "vegetarian chili" at a school and there were mysterious chunks in it. When I asked what was in it, the lady said, "that's beef!"
Then, I went to the bathroom and :spew:
I've learned over the years that some people's definition of a vegetarian meal is one that has vegetables in it.

yeah, i agree with that... ppl can be weird.
ive never had s lip up intentionally. there was this one time (i think it was about three years ago) wehre my mother wnated the entire family to go over to a friends hous ean dhave a new years day meal and celebrate and stuff. so we went, and i didnt want to eat anything becuase i dont trust other people with food. but mother said that it was rude. i insisted, so did she. about four hours later, she came into the room i was with (i was playing barbies with the little girl... she had fun) anyways, so i was in the bedroom where most ppl were in the living room and she brought me salad. i dotn eat salads. almost ever. i ve eaten mayb ethree in the past four years.
anyways, so i ate it (this was when i was only vegetarian. im vegan now) and she put this ranch stuffj on it, so i couldnt relaly tell waht was in the salad. but after a wh ile, i was like hmmm.. what's that what'ss that? etc. and i kenw whate everything was except for thsi red thing. i aksed the girl waht it was, and she's like "thats the tomato" and i siad "noo, THAT'S the tomato" then i went to the bathroom and washed off one of those myserious cube thingies and it was MEAT!!!
aah! but i was with the little girl so, i couldnt throw up or anything, b ut omfg, i was SO disgusted!!! and i just went into the kitchen and asked for water - to at least get rid of the ickines... a little at least.
mother said that i looked like i was crying and asked me what was wrong. i told her. and my mother said that she had asked the woman if there 3was any meat in it and she said no. then the woman was wondering why it matters. my mother said "she's a vegetarian. i told you rmember? " and she's like ohhh,m sorry. the meat's dried (dehydrated or something liek that) so i didnt think it qualified.
not qualified as meat just b/c it's dried???? sigh* some people are such weirdoe.s .....
yeah, that was about it.......
haha yes, also a lot of people think that things like "beef powder" are just flavoring and not really beef. I always hear "you can't eat the chicken ramen? it's only flavoring..."
...where do they think the flavoring comes from?

I've never accidentally slipped up, but I've purposefully eaten bad things due to the situation. At home I'm 100% veggie, but when I'm at restaurants or other people's houses I've eaten cheese with rennet and once, in the restaurant from hell, I had turkey soup and ate around the turkey chunks. (I know I got the broth anyway, but c'est la vie). Fortunately (?) I don't find meat gross and repulsive, so I've never cried/threw up after an "intentional slip up."
I was drunk a few weeks after going vegetarian and halfway through a hotdog (which are disgusting enough anyway) I went "Oh, I shouldn't eat this! I'm vegetarian!" And then yesterday I took some tablets then looked at the packet to see what the ingredients were and saw that the shell was made of gelatin. I felt even more ill after that!

there have been a few times that I have gotten my food made incorrectly, usually at little ethnic (except Thai) restaurants where they don't understand me that well, but I don't really consider them 'slip-ups' on my part because I was as clear as I could have been. I don't let those bother me, I just keep a mental file of the restaurants and items and keep learning!
I did, however, eat a huge bowl of ice cream after I went vegan for no apparent reason. :spew: that was, of course, before I had soy delicious in the house :pibo:

i made a brilliant slip up last week. i was eating with clients, and since the chef knows i'm vegan he whips up some gorgeous fresh hummus + roast veggie open sarnies for me (always the same filling, but i can't really complain). anyway, the clients are all being very polite and waiting for me to start. i take a huge bite out of what i thought was mine - but it turns out it was salmon and lemon mayo with roasted veggies. They were watching me so i couldn't spit it out - I even managed to tell them how nice it was after swallowing it...

I never realized how much fish sauce is in most Thai food. I used to order the green papaya salad all the time until I found out about the fish sauce in it. I could really smell it when I brought the leftovers home. Then I got a Thai cook-book and practically every recipe has fish sauce.
They use fish sauce instead of salt so it is in most everything, even the noodle dishes.

I have an amazing Thai vegetarian cookbook - straight from the source, I took a cooking class at a vegetarian restaurant in Thailand. You can buy it online at www.thaivegetarianrecipes.com (there's also some sample recipes). There is a recipe for Som Tom (spicy papaya salad) which is quite good (it's not in the free version though - I could post it but I'm not sure about the copyright?).
Sorry for the OT post - I didn't slip at all after going vegetarian, but I'm still struggling to avoid baked goods since I've gone vegan. I tend to go with "what I don't know won't hurt me" but it's really hard to use that as an excuse with something like a brownie (which will obviously have eggs etc. if an omni made it). I'm getting better though!

Thank you - I do have a cookbook called True Thai and there's a vegetarian section with a veggie version of Tom Som. When I made Tam Kai Gai (the coconut soup), I had to really add a lot of salt to get the same flavor. It is pretty surprising how salty that fish sauce is.
I will bookmark that site. Thanks!

I was 11 when I went vegetarian, so for a couple years I didn't know what gelatin was and ate it (yuck) the same for a few other trace ingredients.
About 6 months after I went vegan I went to Starbucks and ordered an extra large soy latte, and the person at the cash register wrote the little "S" on the cup that is supposed to mean soy milk. I drink it and it tastes a little off but I don't think anything of it. 15 min later I'm so sick I have to go home and had I eaten anything I'm sure I would have throw up. I realize that that was a skim latte, not soy. I woke up the next morning covered from head to to with big red hives that didn't go away for two weeks.

At Chili's we ordered the nachos and i thought they had a weird look to them. I asked my mom what was underneath the cheese and she said it was just mashed up black beans. Well, after eating one chip i knew something was wrong so i ran and grabbed a menu and it turns out their beef queso is on the nachos! My stomach ached and i mentally felt gross but thank goodness i only had one chip!

fish and chips about 2 days ago :( i havent eaten it or any other meat for 6 months.... i felt guilty bying it, felt guilty unwrapping it, ate it and felt even more guilty... i wont be doing that again!
Last month I was in Madrid for a week for a school project, and one night I got a takeout salad that I thought was lettuce and tomato. I was too tired to take the time to read and translate the label. After I bought it and opened it up to eat, I thought it smelled weird but had a bite anyway. Turns out that what looked like tomato was RAW SALMON. I spit it out immediately, ugh. I really wish I had read the label. I've been having trouble eating tomatoes ever since. :(

I had something similar to that happen to me in Italy Katieq, I think I blocked it out until you reminded me!
I ordered what looked like mushroom pizza, but when I ate it there was the most horrible taste in my mouth, and I learned that even if I were an omni I would rather shove bamboo rods under my toenails than eat an anchovy. The taste wouldn't get out of my mouth no matter what I did, it was awful.

i went vegetarian at 13 just before chistmas, and i ate the meat at the christmas dinner....ughk then after that i slipped up and had a can of tuna fish......then....my last ever taste of meat was when i was in a manic high and ate a hungry jacks burger(yurrrghhhhk!)but since then, ive been vegetarian for over 2 years............i went vegan on the 1st of april and i accidently bough weetbix hi-bran which contains 1.5% honey.i decided to eat them coz nobody else in the house would and thats just wasteful.since they only weigh 70g per serve, thats like a gram of honey so it doesnt matter too much.i almost slipped up and had a piece of mums partners birthday chocolate mudcake but then after deciding to eat it or not eat it 8 times, i said nope im not going to have a piece. eatingout is hard, school made me a wrap, a salad wrap that i ordered becuase they only make chicken wraps without you having to order....well when i took a bite, i tasted chicken looked down, spat it out, took it back.i dont care if thats wasteful, i refuse to eat something against my beliefs if ive ordered something without chicken.another slip-up happened at a restaurant, an all you can eat buffet restaurant..i got some potato skins which i thought only had tomato sauce and cheese on them(when i was still vegetarian)and took a bite, tasted like meat(couldnt see the meat coz of the cheese, could only see sauce) spat it out, went and asked the waiter and they said they had beef in them........but the sign only said "tomato & cheese potato skins" i feel so disgusting and dirty when things like that happen.

I've slipped up in the sense of not knowing something wasn't veg and eating it and then finding out a number of times. I never feel guilty about this, because I don't feel it's my fault.
Within a year of going veg, though, I consciously chose to eat gelatine despite knowing about it twice. I felt bad afterwards, but now I am stronger in my vegetarianism. I wont slip up like that again, and that's all that matters.
I recently ate a box of Frosted Mini Wheats (not in one sitting, over about 2 weeks time). After Easter, I decided to see how long I could eat as a vegan. I was in the cereal section of my local super market, picked up a box of Frosted Mini Wheats, looked at the label to see if they were vegan and saw 'gelatin' listed. Damn.

except at our Thai place, they actually have things labeled 'vegetarian' or 'vegan' and I have asked to be sure. it's why I keep coming back!

I am new here and just became a lacto-vegetarian a few days ago. I am very serious about it so I have not slipped up yet. The only thing I find is that even though I am classified as a lacto-vegetarian I am trying to cut milk completely out of my diet but its proving to be very difficult. It seems like all the foods I enjoy have milk in them...... :(. I started drinking soy milk though so thats one step up. Also I am still taking a regular multi-vitamin thats not vegetarian. I need to go buy some vegetarian vitamins......

I have had a -lot- of slip-ups, some of which are literally forced because of my campus and its lack of vegetarian food choices... ugh. I eat vegetarian whenever remotely possible, but one day, I went to the cafeteria to get some lunch, and ALL they had were chicken paninis. I hated chicken even before I went vegetarian so I really did not want to eat them. I went to the salad bar and it was EMPTY. And my school has cafeteria policies so I had to eat there that day... ugh. Nasty chicken thing.
Got weird looks the day they had gyros and I asked for mine with no meat in it. The girl serving them was like "...these are gyros. They have lamb." And I was like "Not for me. :D"
Off-topic, but on the subject of soy milk: I cannot stand the stuff! I wish I could, because I'd feel a lot better about myself if I could make the shift from lacto-ovo. But I've tried lots of kinds of soy milk and I just think it is disgusting... I was literally over the sink gagging the last time I tried it. Any advice on that? (You can PM me if you want... since that's off topic.)

RM - I haaate soy milk too, so I just don't drink any milk or milk substitutes. I was surprised that I don't really miss it, because I used to love milk. I never was big on cereal though so that hasn't been too much of a problem. Soy milk is fine as a substitute in baked goods but I won't touch it on its own.
Have you tried other nut milks? There's a thread on them over on the food discussion or raw foods board.

If you all hate Soy Milk have you tried the flavored kind? I have never had the plain stuff but I have the vanilla kind and I like it. Its different of course......
