There was a bird caught in the back of the dryer in the laundry room in my dorm today... we first called the uni police to have them check out the scene. being that they did nothing, i took it upon myself to save this poor little guy. We took apart the dryer, caught the bird, and released it outside.
yes, i want a cookie. :hi:
  You're a good girl. I'm glad the bird was OK.

<-------- Passes you a cookie.
cool! glad the bird ended up okay.
reminds me a few years ago when i saved a pigeon. i was driving on the bypass coming from a class and i saw this pigeon on the ground kinda wobbling really near the road. i was afraid it would get hit so i turned around then parked in the median. i took off my over shirt and all the traffic stopped as i went across and caught it. took it to the vet and they said it probably had ingested some granule poison. they were going to keep it and then release it once it was better.

Cookies & birdseed for everyone! I love it when people go out of their way to rescue critters. Once I got back from vacation and noticed a weird crying sound coming from the 6th floor common balcony at my apartment bldg. Turns out there were 2 pigeons stuck in the wire grating of the gutter. I went out there with a blanket & got them both. One was already dead. The other was in bad shape but I cleaned her up & took her to a wildlife rescue vet outside the city.
I got back, and everyone in the bldg was like "yeah we heard the crying for days... it was awful. We didn't know who to call."
"Who to call?" sheesh, ever hear of doing things yourself? :whack:
Anyway, congrats to all self-motivated animal rescuers!! You guys rock!

Can we turn this into a thread about the wildlife we've saved?
Last Friday as I was walking my dog , I saw a possum that didn't make it across the street along with all her babies. When I canme back and looked again, I saw that one of the babies was still moving. So I picked him up and had to make some calls to find a rehaber to take him. I know it's tricky to raise baby possums, but at least now he has a fighting chance. (Gender was confirmed by rehaber).

Yay! Cookies for all! :D
I used to volunteer in a wildlife rescue center. I cleaned cages, and changed water, and fed the animals (mostly birds) at the center. I've held an osprey in my hands and been bitten by pelicans. Okay, now I'm just trying to make it sound glamourous - mostly I cleaned out the bottom of the cages, and changed water, and fed them.

i saved a chipmunk from my gutter pipe(leg caught) AND my cat(was waiting for it to get free) simultaneously so I want 2 cookies.
actually, I wouldn't have known it was there if my cat hadn't been staring into the pipe for two hours, so she should get a cookie as well.
my mom saved a turtle that was trying to cross a road once so i'll take her cookie too.:lick:
I once inherited 4 baby song thrushes which a farmer threw out of his cowshed (apparently it's against health and safety regulations to have birds nesting in your shed). After a couple of days they started to fly which was extra great fun. I put newspaper down in the bathroom and they stayed in there away from our cat. Every time I went in to feed them they'd fly over to me, sometimes landing on me, sometimes falling down, they were just learning. Sadly two of them died but I released the other two. We opened the cage and put them on a fallen tree and they flew off, much further than they could go in the bathroom. It was magic. I hope they survived, I guess I'll never know, a price I was happy to pay for their chance at freedom.
Oh I've got another one. My boyfriend and his friend once came across two baby musocvy ducks. They looked for the Mother but couldn't find her so brought them back to our place. We called them Goku and Trunks and built them a hutch with an indoor and outdoor area on the lawn. They grew really quickly, I think they only survived because they had each other, lone ducklings we've found and tried to raise have died. We ran the bath and bathed them every day to keep their featers nice. They really enjoyed that. Goku in particular loved to dive under the water and swim the length of the bath. Eventually we put a little tub of water which had to be changed every day in their hutch with a little ramp for them to climb in and out. I used to spend hours watching them chase flies. If they caught one they'd eat it and then wag their tiny feathery tails in satisfaction. We had a pond which we released them into when we thought they were big enough -unfortunately we were wrong. One day we came home and found that Goku had been attacked by a hawk. Lots of her feathers were missing and she had a big chunk of flesh lost from her head. We thought she was dead for sure but we took her into the vets crying a lot. We took Trunks with her too, they had survived for this long together and didn't like to be seperated. after a few days they were able to come home. Goku was blind in one eye from then on but the wound in her head healed and apparently her brain wasn't damaged in the attack. They lived around the house for a while but fully grown muscovy ducks are **** factories and then Trunks started chasing our dog and my Mum...so now they live with a boy we met who has lots of other ducks. Although apparently Goku and Trunks prefer to hang out with their goat.
Aw well done! That's great. I have to do this quite a lot with birds and mice that the cats get. Sometimes it is a hostage negotiation situation lol.
Ingested poison? I think its so sad ... what gives us the right to just kill for our own convenience?? We don't own the planet. We'll ... in legal terms I suppose we do. But you get my meaning.

I had an awesome wild animal saving experience this weekend. One of my parents' cats had apperently caught a baby rabbit and brought him (we decided he was a him) inside for one of their less capable cats to play with (apparently a common occurence). This baby rabbit was unhurt but really small and we didn't know whether he was even onto solid foods yet. We had a look in his little bunny mouth and he had tiny little teeth. It was a really stormy and rainy night so we put him in a cat cage with suitable hiding material and some lettuce, grass and water for the night. He was quite friendly and would snuggle into my hand but he wouldn't eat. We were pretty sure he'd die in the night of starvation and shock. I woke during the night to this little chewing sound, apparently wild rabbits like to eat at night when nobody's looking, he ate heaps. We didn't know where he'd come from and even if we put him back we thought the cat would probably just go and get him again, so we went down the farm and found a rabbit burrow. We put him at the mouth of it and he hopped in, it was soooo cute. We didn't know whether it was occupied or not but we waited for a while thinking that if it was, and he wasn't welcome, they'd soon chase him out again. He didn't come out. We left a whole ripped up lettuce outside the burrow for him and hopefully his new family. It was so great, he was the cutest little thing.

Uhm...i've saved worms. I do a lot of worm saving after rains. Like some getting caught in puddles, or caught baking on a walkway in the sun after a storm.
As a kid I'd tried to save baby birds I found in my yard. They rarely made it out alive. I mean they would follow me, and let me hold them without alarm, but it was the eating. They refused to eat, and eventually passed away. i buried all of them. I still know where they are buried, 12-13 years later.
