View Full Version : Keeping dogs cool in summer

I have a siberian husky, and with summer approaching I am worried about her health. Its very humid where I live, and she has had mild heatstroke before. Even on a warm spring day she is listless and doesn't eat much. We keep her inside the air conditioned house, but she does go outside to do her business and it would be unrealistic to expect her to stay inside all day. Someone suggested I get her shaved, but I am against this as I read that it disrupts her shedding process and ruins her coat.
Does anyone have any tips for me?

Do not shave her!!! It ruins the natural insulation of her coat. The best you can do for a husky is either keep her inside or put her in well venelated area with plenty of water (maybe a kiddy pool) and lots of shade. She will shed part of the coat, so trips to the groomer to get all the extra hair removed will also help. When you do let her out, do so in the early morning and late evening when it's cooler out.

when my beloved shepard which we rescued from the pound when i was around 6, i'm 18 now, was alive we we fortunate enough to have a rather large spring fed lake and tons of shade. but we would always hose her down or constantly keep ice cubes in her water bowl.

I second all of cheekywhiskers recommendations, especially the kiddie pool. I'm glad to hear she's not being kept outside 24/7.

my pug gets way too hot too fast too, so i usually lock him in the freezer a few times a day.

ok, really, i just let him out in the mornings and evenings when its cool, or in mid day, he sure likes the hose!

or if you decide you want to shave a dog, only shave some sort of obscene sexual symbol into its back, it wont really hurt the dog, but it will surely give the neighbors a laugh!!!!

Haha bugsy.
Thanks all, but I've decided to give my husky to a sled dog mushing place in Alaska. They have lots of other dogs for her to play with and she'll get a lot of exercise and no heat stroke.

Just kidding!
No, I'm going to buy a kiddies pool and keep her inside for the hottest hours. She's my baby I would never send her away. Lol.

In the summer i fill my dogs bowl full of ice. I also give him ice as a little 'treat' he loves the stuff and it keeps him cool. We now have a four and half month old black lab and i'm afraid she is going to overheat this summer. We are thinking of purchasing a little kiddie pool and placing it next to our inground pool so the dogs can chill out- literally

It's good to get one of those combs that will grab the undercoat to help shed it. Begin combing every other night before it gets hot. Wearing one less coat in the summer has got to be cooler I would think.

Don't shave a husky. Like CW said, the top coat actually keeps them cool. And they have little pigment in their skin and the top coat protects them from uv rays.

Besides AC (which I absolutely refuse to turn on in April, even though mine would love it), a pool and grooming are the two biggest ways to keep her cool. Mine have actually been playing in the pool for about a month now. I don't have the hose out yet, but the pool sat outside all winter so they've been playing in the melted snow.

I have an undercoat rake for mine too, but I can never seem to get all the winter coat out, so I take him to a groomer in the spring. I don't know what they use, but he comes back looking like a different dog.
