View Full Version : Proper demarcation for simple food stuffs in stores and restaurant.

Why not we have eatables and consumables properly marked which are fit for vegetarian clients. Say "bread" if it pure vegetarian, it can have a symbol - say a green dot in a box- which can give indication if the product is suitable for vegetarians. (with or without dairy option).
similary some simple products like sauces, dressings, bread, biscuits, canned foods, chocolates, pizza base, fries, ice creams etc.
It is really very difficult to make out if such products are vegetarian or not . No one really helps in stores and if we write to company, they take few weeks to respond with a simple weblink.
In any restaurants in U.S.A., CANADA there is hardly anything which is vegetarian, even if there is something- it is called veggie , but not really vegetarian. Why it is so difficult in world for restaurants to clearly convey the message or create atleast one legally branded vegetarian dish? wHY IS IT so difficult to respect vegetarians? when there are nearly 600 million vegetarians on this planet?
Jesus, in the UK everything is labelled and theres an allegy list of eggs, milk etc, but mostly it will have a V sign on it. Theres nearly always a veg option in restraunts. Doesn't cost them anything does it to put a sign on, Where do you live?

We can't even agree on what is vegetarian or vegan, so would you trust food that other people have labelled for you?
And I disagree with your statement that there's hardly anything vegetarian available when you eat out. Everywhere I go I seem to have several choices.
After being veg you get an eye for label anyway, what city are you in Michael? Only place I've had problems is TGI Fridays. Think that they are supposed to be reviewing labeling anyway
With supermarket food just read the labels. Granted, sometimes a product might just have "natural flavourings" on it, but most have the ingredients in full. I'm another one who doesn't find it particularly hard to eat out. There's a world of vegetarian food out there! Where do you live by the way?
Mostly manchester- which is really good. Oxfords ok too but not as good as manchester

Central Illinois, we're kind of stuck in a cornfield. :) We have most of the major chain restaurants and quite a few ethnic restaurants.

I am in Canada, Most of the restaurants in Canada do not know what is fit for vegetarian and any store do not educate anything about the ingredients, unless you really come with 100% knowledge eg if mono-di-glycerides is from veg or non veg source, or rennet is from artificial enzymes or from calves.
i have even written to all the companies, but they never give right facts. i have written to cheese companies, dominos, many pizza makers, nestle, icecream makers, bread makers. They always give mutilated information.
Mcdonalds around orangeville said they use vegetable oil for fries, but they use beef fat. So What happens when a restaurant or food manufacturer do not reveal proper information.
I have always starved in rest of canada except in Toronto, GTA and Vancouver. It is quite possible that I am not well informed or going out with little knowledge. But in Canada we never get right facts and right ingredients in most of cases.
