For the past 2 weeks, every night, at the same time, my phone rings and the caller ID says "Colorado" and so I think its a telemarketer and dont answer and they never leave a message.

So it rings again last night and I pick it up, just to see. Its PETA, asking for a monthly donation. I say, send me some info, Ill see if I can contribute. They persist, asking for one large gift in the place of monthly donation. I say, again, send me info, Ill see if I can contribute. NO, I will not give my credit card # to a telemarketer.

I am really disappointed that PETA is soliciting in this way. Its shady, annoying and aggressive. I work in fundraising, so I know a thing or two about best practices and this is not it.

I am a PETA member already. Has this happeed to anyone else here?

Are you sure it's PETA? Have you enquired with them if this is not a scam? Surely no serious organisation would ask for a credit card number over the phone?

That sounds very suspicous :(

I would be very surprised if that call was authentic.

I've been a PETA member for many years and never got a call like that, and I don't think that they would ever do that. Maybe you could contact PETA about the call you received?

I really doubt that call came from PETA. You may want to email PETA and ask them if they are into telemarketing. If they are, ask to have your name removed from the list.

Don't ever give your credit card info over the phone!

Yes, it's happened to me. I usually just tell them I already donated to get them off my back.

Peace,Vivian

Vivian: Just because you got a call, doesn't mean it was authentic. It could have been part of a scam. Also, it could be that PETA does some telemarketing, but the OP said that the person asked for her credit card number. This could be someone just jumping on the bandwagon.

Would be curious to know PETA's views on this.

I HATE TELEMARKETERS!!!! It's a wicked system. They are intruders - I call them "invaders". What a cheek phoning people in the privacy of their homes. I don't even bother anymore to speak to them. I just hang up the moment I realise who is calling.

PETA does do this. They'll call everyday until you answer. The thing that annoys me most is that they are asking people who have already given them money to give them more. I used to support them but no longer. The last time someone called I told them point blank that I no longer support them and future calls would be considered harrassment. I never heard from them again after that and it's been over a year.

Well, that just sucks! Shame on you PETA! Telemarketers are one of the lowest life forms.

My sister bangs the phone against the wall when they call. I stick the phone in the toilet and flush. Although I'm tempted to just try heavy breathing. Although we don't get too many since we got an unlisted phone number.

My advise, as a tele-whore, would be to make sure you identify yourself, then ask to taken off the list. If you just hang up, there is a good chance that you will just be called back.

That, or just poor bastards with crappy jobs.

It would be awesome if PeTA would have my evil company call for them.

I just want to say that I am a telemarketer and I will not apologize. I will tell you the same thing I tell everyone. I am working hard to try and put myself through school, so unless you want to put me through college, please, just let me do my job.

Listen people. If you don't like telemarketers, then when they call, just tell them to you off their calling list. That's all you have to do. You're making yourselves look like a bunch of asses when you bitch and moan.

In some countries, it doesn't work like that. One can't generalise. This is an international board and there are different laws in different countries.

And even in the countries where this does work, it doesn't stop other telemarketers from phoning who still have you on their list.

Ok, if you're in the US, all you have to do is tell them to take you off their calling list.

I love saying that to people.

I received this type of call from someone one behalf of peta myself. I support peta's work and am grateful for many of the things they do. There are things I disagree with, but I just earmark my donations when I am able to give to them for the campaigns that I believe in.

The person who called me was obviously not a peta employee but a telemarketer contracted by them for service. She began by telling me about a recent poultry farm investigation and about open rescues, (which I am very familiar with.) I would bet a lot of money that this person ate both chicken and eggs habitually, and couldn't give less of a crap about the subject- she was just reading off a card- which was quite a turn-off in and of itself. Anyway, I politely said that I appreciated their work and was very well familiar with it- that I could not donate just then but would think about it and always donate when I am able. She just PUSHED and PUSHED and PUSHED. It really turned me off. I don't think this was a good decision for peta. Hopefully they will re-think.

Funny, nobody except PETA has ever called me and I donate to about a dozen organizations. I do however have enough address labels to last me a lifetime!

Yeah, I got used to saying that too when I was a phone canvasser.

I've never been called by any animal protection organization or any environmental group, even though I've donated to dozens of them for years. From what I can recall, the only people who have ever called me were the ACLU and USPIRG.
