I've found that "Blue" is a surprisingly common name for a dog. Is there a reason for this that eludes me?

Blue eyes are often rare in dogs, so dogs with blue eyes will often be named Blue. Case in point with our blue eyed dog Blue at the shelter now. Puppies also will sometimes start off with blue eyes and then change to brown.
Some breeds also have a purple/blue tint to their coat when sunlight hits it, such as a bluetick coonhound.
It could also be a reflection of the dog's mood... a laid back somber dog might get that nickname.

Blue's clues? the show? with the blue dog.
Here's an example of what kpickell was talking about, a picture of one of my best friend's dogs, Ledger. He's a blue sheltie.

I see this all the time, eg. a few days ago a sign on a barn that read "Blue Dog Farm" or such.
The first Blue I met was an Aussie service dog, neurotic as can be (like his owner).

This is interesting: http://www.seefido.com/html/australian_dog_name.htm
I think in general it's a common name for dogs with blue-ish coats.

You got it.
Then my step-daughter says, "Grandpa, if you get tired of Blue, can we have him?" :D
i knew someone with a blue heeler named blue.
