Theoretically, considering the number of vegetarians is increasing, do you think it is possible that in the *near?* future whole countries may become vegetarian?. I mean theres a hierarchy both within and between species e.g. at the top would be white males, white females, then black males etc. It seams that the gaps are closing. If you think back to when cannabalism was considered acceptable in certain societies, when black slavery had widespread support, before women had the vote etc. Perhaps animals may just be lower down in the hierarchy and its inevitable that this gap will narrow until they are granted basic rights such as to life and freedom

I doubt that. I think we will live like the Jetson's before that happens.:p

Not in the near future... but in the distant distant future when meat becomes more expensive than laboratory grown meat or fake meat, we may all become accidental vegetarians.

"In the past ten years, the number of vegetarians has doubled and is increasing at a rate of 5,000 each week."

I think and sure hope that our entire society will be vegan. I don't know how long it will take... I'm guessing that 2200 is a reasonable estimate. I read a book where a guy travelled back in time from 2065 and saw how horrible the meat industry was. According to the book, meat was banned in 2008.

It probably isn't increasing on a linear scale. Once a critical mass happens I am guessing things will get moving a lot faster.

I think that the numbers will increase, but we shall still be the minority for many years to come...*sigh*

No since people who live "alternative" lifestyles don't reproduce as fast, I believe.

IMO, the change would likely be achieved as a reaction to an epidemic or breakthrough discovery transmitted through the slaughter and eating of animals (on a global level and not yet recognized), as opposed to a gradual change due to morals. Many are already aware of the health risks and the damage to the planet, but it would take a rate of demise similar to that of AIDS to become equally recognizable to the masses. Then, when the connection is made and it hits the pocketbook of meat and dairy and alternative means are necessary to line their pockets, I believe that is when we will see the greatest change. If history teaches us anything about humanity it is that we are more reactive than proactive when it comes to the earth. It's only a matter of time. These are my personal thoughts and opinion, nothing more.

What Book?

"God Does Not Eat Meat" by Aurthur Poletti. There is no need to buy it, it can be read online.

I can't believe I didn't mention the book! How selfish of me!

I think the modern methods of farming are more susceptible to waves of disease, such as the bird flu and mad cow disease. Once people become afraid to eat something, that fear will stay with them for a long time. Only then could I see entire countries becoming veg*n, but I think they'd see themselves as more screwd than veg*n.

I'm guessing that society will become entirely vegan and rights and personhood will be granted to animals long before 2200. According to the UK Vegetarian Society, vegetarians will make up more than 50% of the UK population by 2047. Obviously, it will take longer in the US but hopefully we'll have some government reform that will abolish agricultural and corporate subsidies which will in turn abolish factory farming and most forms of vivisection. From there, things might snowball. I hope to see this all happen within my lifetime. Think about it, in 1903 the Supreme Court (of the US) declared that wives were the property of her husband and if you raped a married woman you were violating her husband's property rights. Roughly a century later, we've had a two female secretaries of state, one female attorney general, a female caucus leader in the House of Representatives, and we're in the midst of the battle over gay rights. All within a century. And in 2008, we might have a woman president, possibly even two women on the ballot. Progress comes quicker than people.
