Hey guys, today I am requesting information on rhubarb!

Before I went vegetarian, I had a homemade rhubarb pie (made from homegrown rhubarb) and it was awesome!

Anyway, I've been working on collecting a ton of recipes for this summer (home from college!) and I've found a bunch of yummy ones that include rhubarb.
I was also talking to some other people and it seems to be one of those under-rated vegetables and that it's quite good!

---

Anyway, what I am wondering about is,
when you can get rhubarb at the supermarket?
do most supermarkets carry it, when it's in season?
where would one go, to get a rhubarb plant to grow in their own backyard?
any yummy rhubarb recipes that you have? (vegan please)

THANKS IN ADVANCE! :D

Sorry I can't help you. The only time I've had rhubarb was when a lady at church used to make rhubarb and strawberries for me and my brother. Man was it good! My neighbor used to grow it when I lived in Ohio. I don't know where all it grows and how you would get seeds or a plant. I haven't seen them before.

I wouldn't recomment eating rhubarb raw, as it hurts your stomach!

But, I have a very sensitive stomach, so if it works for you, that's cool!
I really like rhubarb cooked though, thats why the thread title got my attention:)

ummm... rhubarb by itself is incredibly sour. That's why it's almost always cooked with sugar or some other sweetener. It's coming into season right now though, so you should be able to find it in supermarkets or farmers markets. The leaves are usually removed before the stalks are sold though, because that part of the plant is toxic.

I decided to buy some rhubarb seeds off of eBay...if I plant them this spring, everything may be all set to start "harvesting" by next summer or fall!!!

(I may also look into getting some shoots or roots or something when I go back home...)

I thought raw rhubarb was poisonous and if you don't cook it before eating it, it will kill you.
