Rejoice! A canned vegetarian chili actually sold at my grocery store! I know it's at least l-o, but it looks rather vegan to me... *rereads label* but there's saturated fat (not much, but some) in it. Which means it ...can't be vegan? Oh, I don't know. Could a real vegan tell please me?

Water, beans (red, pink and black beans), texturized soy flour (soy flour, caramel colour), tomato paste, onions, tomatoes (contain citric acid, calcium chloride), carrots, celery, zucchini, sugar, green bell peppers, modified corn starch, high oleic sunflower oil, red bell peppers, spices, salt, garlic.

Anyhow, I just had lunch: Nuked the chili as directed, poured over toast, put cheese on top, ate. Mmmmm...

I thought it was pretty darn good. Probably not the healthiest lunch, but it was quick and it was tasty. Better than the frozen Yves stuff, I think. And much cheaper.

It wasn't at all spicy, so it should lose some points there. I wasn't really in the mood for spicy, but if I was, I would've had to add about half a bottle of hot sauce to make it so. It never CLAIMED to be spicy (label says mild) but spicy is something I want to expect out of chili.

So... I recommend it. There we go.

There is saturated fat in plant foods. Nuts, seeds, olive oil, etc all contain a certain amount, even if it small. Other foods such as coconut and palm oil are extremely high in saturated fat.

Cholesterol however is only found in animal foods, hence any product containing cholesterol is not vegan.

Wow, someone who likes toast + chili! I love that combo... haven't had it in awhile, but I think I know what I'll be eating for lunch tomorrow. :-)

*gives that ingredients list a quick glance*

Yeah, that looks vegan. :-)

Hurrah! Thanks... my science teacher is a liar... or, well, misinformed... but I prefer liar. I wondered why the textbook said "MOST saturated fats" and our notes said "ALL saturated fats..."

Chili and toast... forever delicious.

I just found Hormel vegetarian chili at my supermarket - can't remember if it's vegan or not (I got it for my kids) but they LOVED it...

Also if you live on the West Coast, Nalley's Chili makes two vegetarian ones, one is vegetarian - the other is vegan...

I think most canned chilis I've seen are vegan. I haven't scrutinized the Hormel label, tho.

A lot of canned vegetarian chilis (not to be confused with chiles :whack:) have whey in them.... don't ask me why.

animallover: Some sugar is filtered thru bone char, thus making it "not vegan" technically. Beet sugar is not filtered this way, only cane sugar, and many of your generic store-brands of sugar are actually beet sugar.

Also, "Florida Crystals" brand of cane sugar is not bone-char processed.

OK, back on topic.

Fantastic Foods makes a really good chili mix in a cup that you just add hot water to. It's called Cha Cha Chili and it's so good. It has TVP in it and I would have sworn it was meat if I hadn't read the label.
