"Q From Australia. I've got a question about global warming -- in the Australian Parliament, Tony Blair called for greater action. And this seems to be something that the U.S. President could make a major difference on. There's a virtual consensus that the planet is warming. If you addressed issues like emissions, fuel efficiency, issues to do with alternative energy in your last few years as President, it could make a significant difference I think to the --

THE PRESIDENT: I appreciate you bringing that up.

Q -- and I suppose I want to know, what is your plan?

THE PRESIDENT: Good. We -- first of all, there is -- the globe is warming. The fundamental debate: Is it manmade or natural. Put that aside. It is in our interests that we use technologies that will not only clean the air, but make us less dependent on oil. That's what I said in my State of the Union the other day. I said, look -- and I know it came as quite a shock to -- for people to hear a Texan stand up and say, we've got a national problem, we're addicted to oil. But I meant what I said."

Wow....If Bush has come out and said that global warming is an actual scientific event....this could mean one or two things: 1) we're doomed and even the most stubborn, ridiculously shortsighted people have to notice or 2) he's a reasonable person after all.

We're definitely doomed as far as global warming and the environment's concerned, but unfortunately I don't think that even the most shortsighted people will still see it....

And it's certainly not #2 ;)

We can rule out that option. Absolutely and irrevocably.

Oh, we're doomed. Pretty much.

i read a book once that showed before oil, our resources supported up to a billion people, and now, in like 10-50 years, we're gonna run out of oil... kinda makes sense, there isnt an infinite supply of that stuff ya know? the population timeline graph took an insanely unnaturally HUGE sudden spike with the discovery of oil... makes me wonder if it will level back out soon.......

do everything to use an alternative energy source NOW, and start preparing to live off the grid, it would be wise to start growing your own food pretty soon if you can...

may the force be with us...

i could be wrong tho, can anyone tell me how that is not possible?

3) His advisors suggested he say it to avoid looking misinformed and ignorant.

Well, technically you are wrong, because we're not going to "run out of oil." We're going to run out of cheap oil (we are running out of cheap oil, currently). Our globalized world economy and way of living is based on cheap oil.

But that's another topic covered several times in other threads.

ah, ok, i was wondering about any flaws, but oopsie daisy, i was unaware of this being other topics, :surprised

you may proceed :)

No, certainly the issue of running out of cheap oil plays into global warming, because it means we'll scramble to use other forms of energy such as coal, but what you're talking about is called "Peak Oil" and I've blathered on about it a bunch in other threads to the annoyance of many.

I think all our big problems are connected.

You're welcome to discuss whatever you want! :)

I'm still convinced the oil industry has something to do with why we have fallen behind the world in our hydrogen fuel cell research and development. Hell, in Munich they are zipping around in HFC buses!

I don't know for sure, but isn't part of it that for decades, the oil industry has been buying the patents, ect. of alternative sources to prevent anyone else from making money from it, or implementing it in the first place? Or something along those lines.

Now it's time to write him a letter, asking him to go vegan for the environment:

The best way we could battle global warming is stop consuming animals (http://veggieboards.blogspot.com/2006/04/best-way-we-could-battle-global.html)

Anyone of sound mind should realize we are "doomed". However, I don't think global warming will destroy society as a whole.

I call President in the shattered post global warming America.

I promise to nuke every abstract idea I disagree with; I'm going to get you intolerance and jealousy

Plus, the nuclear winter might cancel out the global warming. Which is good because nuclear Christmas is right in the middle of nuclear winter and I want some nuclear presents.

He's only saying these things to keep the Repuglicans in Congress. I don't trust any polititian who makes 180 spins after denying it for so long.

Yeah... Was it really his stance that global warming didn't exist at all? (As in neither manmade nor natural, that is.)

the problem is what politicians say is often completely unrelated to what they do.

the republican administration is constantly bending to the interests if big business, and is currently attempting to reduce corporate legal obligations to keep track of and report the pollution they pump into the air and waterways.

for the last election i got my wife to go to the both parties websites and view their environmental sales pitch...both parties said very similar things, and both sounded as though they would be great for the environment.
