I don't know if anyone else caught the show on TLC about the man who was a bodybuilder and his muscle exploded in his arm, but if you did...what did you think? I really don't understand why people do it, I had no idea some people took it so far either.
I don't know if anyone would be willing to share their story, but have you or has anyone close to you ever used steroids?

My husband is on steroids for a medical condition (prescription). They are absolutely horrible. He was put on them 3 years ago and wants nothing more than to be off them.

I know 3 people currently on steroids for bodybuilding. I think it's awful. 2 of the guys have distinct personality differences from when they were clean, and the other seems the same.

I know one woman who used to take steroids to compete in bodybuilding and now, 15 years later, she still has issues- deeper voice and female problems.

There are alot of reasonably well thought out reasons why someone would take steroids. Why do women starve themselves, vomit, take laxatives, ect.? I would assume its a major body image issue that drives them to feel like they have to be so big so that they can be powerful, attractive, whatever. I have a few friends from my hometown gym and one past fling guy who are on steriods, and they do it to fit in with their other bodybuilder friends and to look impressive, powerful, and strong. Its a body obsession like any other obsession, about controlling your appearance, everything you eat, and the way people perceive you.

Yeah, at my gym there are a few really big guys and one of the girls who works there told me that one of the guys is on steroids. It's a small gym and when I see him his back is always covered in acne, maybe from the steroids. The guy who was doing the documentry on his steroid use said that most bodybuilders not only take steroids but sell them too.
Anyway, thanks for your reply because I never considered it to maybe be anything like anorexia or something like that.

My husband gained 35 pounds in one month after the doctor put him on steroids. He couldn't stop eating, couldn't sleep, and changed from a loving, kind, caring man into a monster. I would have left, but we had a new baby. I have no job skills and no family that would have helped us. He still hasn't returned to normal, as far as his personality goes (he's only on a 10th of the dose he was at that time). I doubt he will ever be the same.

Wow, I'm sorry. I hope everything works out.
And congratulations on the baby:baby:

steriods have some of the WORST lasting effects as far as recreational drugs go.

Most poeple that use them recreationally probably do it to create a body image that they feel satisfied with, or to compete with. Probably not the best idea to use them, but that is my guess as to why some people do.

Thanks-the "baby" just turned 3. Both my kids are wonderful. They love their father. He's good to them. He's become much more patient now. His experience really should be a lesson to everyone.

There are different kinds of steroids. Corticosteroids are often prescribed for asthma and other conditions and have no affect on muscles, whilst anabolic steroids are used by body builders. That's how I understand it anyway.

I have to take corticosteroids sometimes and they cause weight gain and a lot of other horrible side effects. Maybe that's what your husband takes, healthnut?
