This last issue had an article on faith based diets. They only listed one as being vegan and said that "Most of the diets are semivegetarian." They encouraged these type of diets but most of these diets encourage or even require that meat be eaten. I know that The Maker's Diet says that you cannot have soy at all and the book writer is anti vegetarian.
It would have been more appropriate to have the article specifically about vegetarian or vegan faith based diets instead of including and encouraging meaty diets in their magazine.
I think a letter will be written.

Vegetarian Times is made by hunters. You're better off with VegNews, it's vegan.

I was flipping through the March edition and saw that article...I didn't stop to read any of it, but maybe later.
Something that did bug me was an article they had about milk, I didn't see how it gave any good information.

Vegetarian Times was my first exposure to veggie media or anything vegetarian. I was pretty excited when I found it after being vegetarian for 5 years without any outside input. But after a couple of years and especially after becoming vegan I got bored with them and cancelled my subscription. I didn't know it was run by hunters. Was it always? I haven't seen one in 8 years and it sounds like I haven't been missing anything.

Does anybody have any links to information about hunters running Vegetarian Times?

Also, I think that an article exploring how some faiths are cutting down on or cutting out meat is helpful, informative, and inspiring. Every little bit helps. One doesn't have to be pure vegan to help out. I think semi-vegetarians are great!

Well I have been searching for info on this but didn't find much. One of the officers of the publishers used to work for the company that published feild and stream and another initiated the launch of Outdoor Life Network. F&S and OLN are very huntery.

I don't know if that's what they meant.....

A couple months ago I was reading it in the supermarket. There was some article about tips for traveling as a vegetarian or maybe it was eating with other people, I don't really remember. What really pissed me off was one of the tips was to "not be so uptight" and be willing to "pick the meat out." :wall:

I like Vegetarian Times, but you have to realize it's not a propoganda magazine like most vegetarian magazines... this one is geared more towards people who like to eat vegetarian meals sometimes or want to eat healthier, regardless of whether you're an omnivore or veg*n. If you want magazines geared towards vegans, Veg News, Herbivore and Satya are all good (but much too expensive if you ask me)

I like VegNews much better. VegTimes seems geared toward suburban housewives (not that there's anything wrong with s-h's, it's just that I'm not one of them). The source of the rumor that VegTimes is affiliated with hunters is ... VegNews! A recent VegNews number made this claim; I haven't tried to verify it.

I hate vegetarian times. A friend got us a year's subscription for xmas this year :P There are so few good articles, and fewer good recipes - too much fat, too little protein, and does EVERY recipe need to contain either dijon mustard or cilantro??? I hate both of those things!!!

They also repeat recipes.... OFTEN. Lame.

I don't understand how Vegetarian Times can possibly be run by hunters??? Was that some kind of sarcasm or not necessarily real hunters, but some kind of um metaphor? I just can't possibly believe that...

And while I'm sure there are other vegetarian magazines that are more hardcore and pure veg*n... at least Vegetarian Times is a start and good way for omnis to segway into a more vegetarian/less meat-oriented lifestyle... And there's some good stuff in there, I've seen articles that tell a lot of the benefits of a veggie lifestyle, good recipes, etc... Though I'm glad I didn't see the issue someone mentioned about how they recommended 'not being so uptight' and 'picking the meat out' -- that definitely would have really annoyed me...

My mom has this vegan friend from her work, and she always gives my mom vegetarian times /Herbivore magazines for me, so I get the best of both worlds ( free of charge) :p

That was one of the biggest problems I had with them (besides not having enough vegan receipes) after a couple of years you notice the same old receipes.

I agree. I think that it's a positive vegetarian influence which may be more digestible for those who are not hardcore vegans.

Digestible for dijon mustard and cilantro fiends. I couldn't find ONE recipe in the last issue that I wanted to try without serious modifications. Yuck!!! ;-)

I love VT! I find it very informative about nutrition and health issues (my passion) and products and it has great recipes. I can see why vegans might not be in love with it though. But then again, it is called Vegetarian Times, not Vegan Times. Not sure what "hunters running it" means, but I am curious.

It used to be more vegan friendly about 10 years ago. But then I noticed more and more vegetarian receipes and less vegan ones. Plus they would change one little thing and say it was a new receipe, which was aggravating.
