Does a container veggie garden need? I'm sprouting one box at a time indoors in a sunny window, then moving them outside. My patio get very little sun. Will my veggies grow?

Forgot to add, I'm just sprouting my first box now. it's snap peas, and they are just barely beginning. I'm so excited! It's like getting a new pet!

It depends on several factors. Is the shady area warm? If warm, plants can often do with less sun. If cold, not so well. Also depends on the plants. Leafy greens such as lettuce, also some root crops such as beets, carrots, can do with less sun. Fruiting plants such as tomatoes, squash, beans, usually need more sun. Peas may do well with less sun, best just to see how they do. You can increase light availability by putting reflective material around the area, such as boards painted white. Some people even use mirrors or aluminum foil, behind the plants to reflect sun back on them.

Ludi's right...I would try starting with things like your peas and some spinach and maybe lolla rossa lettuce...things that don't need as much sun and might actually bolt (flower and go bitter too fast) with too much sun/heat. I don't have a lot of luck with the container thing, but I am lucky in that I live in a year round growing climate. So I usually just put things in the ground.

I'm in Louisiana. It doesn't get cold here, but it isn't all that sunny. I'm trying peas, lettuce, beans, squash and maybe tomatoes. No roots. I wanted to plant things that require less sun, but ALL the seeds I looked at said to plant in full sun. I really like the foil idea. I think I'll try that.

I hate to tell you this, but tomatoes are sun lovers. Partial shade isn't going to work. Dark greens might work in partial shade, but not tomatoes. They need heat AND sun.

I think you'll get at least some tomatoes in partial shade. My yard is very shady, and last year even with a drought I got a handful of cherry tomatoes and a couple of regulars.

I also grew tomatoes in part shade and got more tomatoes than I had previously in full sun.

But it was very warm part shade....

Great! I don't expect to get tons of veggies, especially tomatoes, but i'd like to get a few. I did find some lettuces that are supposed to do well in partial shade, and I figured out a way to raise my boxes so that they get more sun. Hope that works!

Our peas and growing so fast! I'm really excited about it.

That is true about the cherry tomatoes...I had some in partial shade and got tons. But I thought she was talking about regular ones...and then again, what works in my yard doesn't work in other's yards. :)

I'm planting grape tomatoes, but I'm holding off on them till it's quite warm. We have been having a very mild weather, but it recently got quite cold.

I did plant some lettuce, spinach and dill, outside in raised boxes, and I put the peas outside. I have one sunny spot, just big enough for 2 boxes and a small trellis. I'm debating whether to give that spot to the peas or the asparagus beans. Maybe I can arrange things enough to make room for all 3. I'm leaning toward the asparagus beans, since peas are better in the shade, right?

I ran out of soil, so my planting is on hold till I can get some more. Next I will do a box of 4 herbs, then carrots, then sweet onions, then multicolored peppers, then asparagus beans, green beans, zucchini, yellow squash and finally tomatoes and parsley. I will still have room for one more box. I'm thinking maybe mesclun or perhaps some berries. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

Beans need to be in the sun. :)

Thanks Ludi. I'll put the peas off to the side and keep the beans in the sun. Yay!
