I found my dog dead in the backyard this morning. It was really hard but i was able to get through it without crying. I'm really going to miss her alot. I've had her for 10 years. My mom, on the other hand, was balling her eyes out. In fact, she balled her way all the way to McDonalds afterwards.

I just don't understand people.
How could anyone be ignorant, and insensitive enough to have dead animals on the brain right after losing a beloved animal?

I'm so sorry that your dog is gone.
And yeah, most people do have a disconnect between companion animals and "food" animals. It's unfortunate. Your mom most likely doesn't mean to be insensitive, she's just eating what she usually does.

i'm sorry to hear about your dog...perhaps your mum couldn't face cooking so just got some 'comfort food' - if your mum buys mcdonalds usually, then she probably doesn't associate it with an actual animal like you or i would. i wouldn't mention this to her if i were you - it sounds like she's taken your dogs death pretty hard.
sorry again about your dog

When I saw the title of the thread, I thought your Mum had eaten your dog!

Sorry for your loss, your mum sounds really upset about it, so it's obvious that she just doesn't realise what she's doing. There's also the emotional connection to your dog, whereas there isn't one with the cow(s) used to make her beef burgers.

 for the dog.

Just remember, for your mom, a companion animal is on a completely different plane that a cow that she is eating. She probably was not even associating her meat with the fact that it had once been a living, breathing creature. MOst people are pretty good about forgetting about that!

Exactly, in the converse she'd probably wonder how you can be thinking about vegetarianism and animal rights after losing a beloved friend. Your dog's death had nothing to do with vegetarianism, so it's rather insensitive to turn this into a pissing match about who loves animals more. Binging on greasy comfort foods is a way some of us deal with grief.

Sorry to hear about your dog. :(

Sorry to hear about your dog. I lost my cat in Sept and it's one of the most heart breaking things I have gone through.

Sorry to hear about your dog. I lost my dog on January 19th. It wasn't as sudden as your loss seems. At first it was hard, but not that hard to deal with because I was kinda in denial. There was a lot of crying and we had a really nice funeral service for her. You'll think about her hundreds of times a day as you do your normal things and it'll be hard especially when you start noticing how many dogs are in commercials and around you everyday. I still half expect her to get excited when I pick up my keys or put on my coat :)
It will get easier, but just know that she's in a better place and she's happy and you will see her again. Make sure you keep a lot of pictures you have of her around so you never forget how special and loving she is.
