I dont understand why you get a cold just because it's cold outside. wouldn't it be less bacteria since everything is frozen and stuff?
i seriously dont get this, someone explain? our bodies just get sick from being cold? why?!

Colds are from bacteria....period. Have you ever got a cold in the summer time? From what my understanding is that colds have nothing to do with the weather. No such thing as going out with your hair wet and you will "catch a cold."
Someone correct me if I am wrong.

No... but if you are GETTING sick (but your body has it controlled to a point that you feel fine) and get really cold, it's a shock to your immune system, and you will either have a greater chance of getting sick or stay sicker longer... but it isn't the weather itself that makes you sick.

that makes more sense. I have a really bad cold and I was thinking about it, I haven't really been outside or anywhere where I would GET cold. I think I just got it from my mom. which would make more sense then getting a cold just from being cold.
thanks you guys :)! <--educated now

For the record, colds are caused by a virus, not a bacteria. If it was as simple as a bacteria then an antibioidic would cure it and we certainly would have found that antibiodic by now.
NO NEED TO RUN TO THE DOCTOR FOR ANTIBIODICS WHEN YOU HAVE THE COLD OR FLU THEY DON'T WORK.
More people are indoors during the winter and this is one theory it's more prevalent during the winter. Or like the flu virus there may be seasons it's more active because of it's life cycle.
The best defense against colds is frequent and thorough handwashing and healthy living, including lots of fruits and veggies.

Tweety-just what I was going to say. A cold is not from bacteria but from a virus.
I would think colds are more prevelant in the winter because people don't get enough fresh air or enough air circulating in there house. If there is a virus going around it thrives indoors where people keep their houses very warm.

colds are more prevalent in winter because we are indoors more with people in small areas
at least, that and what Tova said is what i thought?

I usually have to explain this to lots of people. I rarely get sick, it's been years. Colds are caused by germs in a nutshell. Passing it through contact when someone touches their eyes, nose & mouth & you are in the same environment. Soemone sneezes covers their nose & mouth w/ their hand & then opens a door & you place your hands where theirs were & chances are now possible-depending on your immune system. Colds are viral which is why there is no cure for it. Scientists have not found cures for ANY viral infection. You can't catch a cold from wet hair in cold weather. I do this all the time & here in Boston it's colder more months out of the year than warmer. Keep away from people who sneeze or cough around you, their germs are left wherever they have been.

There's a pH theory based on the fact that foods break down in the body to affect the blood. Food residue makes the blood more alkaline (better) or more acid (worse). You can find charts all over the Web like the one at trans4mind. I can't say for sure whether the theory is true, but I do know that when I eat acid forming foods, I am sick and achy, and when I keep to an 80-20 mix of mostly alkaline foods, I'm much better. I create a much better internal environment for my immune system to function correctly. Could it be that too much 'Christmas Cheer' causes cold viruses to get a foothold? Decide for yourself!

I notice I will get a cold after being outside in the cold weather. I think it has to do with the fact the cold air makes my nose dribble and tickle and I will end up touching my nose with my hands. And then I spread the germs from my hands to my nose. This winter I never left the house without a kleenex in my pocket and I washed my hands like a maniac.
