Gelatin foods?

Okay, so I'm not exactly new to being a vegetarian (over a year and a half), but just recently I found out that gelatin contains animals (I was very oblivious to this). I was wondering if anyone knew which foods exactly contain it. So far all I know is Jello.

Lots. I contacted Knox, the major manufacturer of gelatin, a few years ago and found that there is no such thing as synthetic gelatin, so if the labels says gelatin in the ingredients, it's got animal in it!

FYI - Agar Agar is a great general purpose vegetable substitute, should you need one in your cooking.

Look at the ingredients of practically every processed food and it may contain gelatine.

Some common things that may have gelatine as an ingredient:

icream, and all icecream desserts, even icy poles
cakes
cream
biscuits
lollies (especially jelly like lollies)
capsules of vitamins and medicines
powdered dessert mixes


Surprising things that may contain gelatine:
cereal
custard
pop tarts

Unfortunately you just have to keep on looking at the ingredients of almost everything till you get the hang of knowing where it might be.

You may see ingredients like 'vegetable gelatine', this is fine as it's not gelatine, rather a substitute like agar or carageenan gum etc.

Kosher gelatine is almost always NOT veggie, often made from fish.

Look for products that say 'suitable for vegetarians and/or vegans' and you'll have an easier time of it.

It gets easier as time goes by.

- gummy chewy candies... such as skittles, gummy bears, etc.

- "frosted" items such as frosted mini wheats and frosted pop tarts.

- anything with marshmellows.

- some planters peanuts.

- lite margarines

Actually there are marshmellow things with no gelatin :) Just gotta look at the label.

Funny.. I've never found any ice cream that contains gelatin. Some popsicles do. Frosted Mini-wheats and Frosted Pop Tarts do (but not the unfrosted kinds). A lot of desserts and candies do, but you just have to get used to reading labels.

Some ice creams do...though many ice cream companies steer clear from it these days because there's plenty other things they could use which will still allow them to make good ice cream yet also means their products will be vegetarian.

Froggy, I know Twizzlers are vegan. (And I'm addicted to them!) I'm almost positive the red color is red #40.

Twinkies don't contain gelatin. The aren't vegetarian though because they may contain lard or animal shortening.

I didn't realize the heart candies contained gelatin though. But you're right, I looked them up online and that is one of the ingredients.

On the subject of candy... most Jelly Beans contain Gelatin, but there are several brands that do not including Starburst Jelly Beans which are vegan.

It's nice to know that after watching my kids munching on valentine hearts for the last few days, I find out they contain gelatin. You just never know what the heck is in our food.

I believe black licorice doesn't have gelatine, but I may be wrong...the black licorice pigs I ate over Christmas didn't have gelatine. (Yes, licorice pigs...shaped like litte pot belly pigs, but licorice!)

It's amazing what has gelatin in it. You really have to always check those ingredient lists. Don't asume all gummy candies have gelatin in them. A lot of them don't and half the time it's the ones that seem like they ought to. After mourning the loss of smores for a year I discovered that the marshmallow spread (Jet Puffed- marshmallow cream) doesn't have gelatin in it (although it does have egg whites).

Yep. And for a vegan alternative, Smuckers Marshmellow topping is vegan. (However, it doesn't go well with hot chocolate as it disintegrates instantly. I prefer little melty pieces. But that's ok.) There's also some vegan fluff in the organic section at the store, I don't know the brand.
