View Full Version : Who wants to go raw for 3 days?
Michael
02-03-06, 05:29 AM
Hummus! and I are going to eat raw for 3 days next week and I thought I'd see if anyone else wants to join in.
We're going to do it Wed/Thu/Fri of next week, so that's the 8th, 9th, and 10th. If you want to do it other days that's fine too.
We don't have many raw recipes on VB but there are plenty to be found elsewhere on the web. It looks like http://www.vegweb.com has quite a few.
Awesome! Good for you guys. I think it should be longer than 3 days, though. :p But that's a great start. Good luck with it.
http://www.rawfoodtalk.com also has some great recipes (just do a search) as well as tons of helpful information.
I'll check my links tomorrow and add more to help you guys out.

Well, next week we're going to do it for 3 days and then the week after we're going to do it for a whole week.
I figured that'd give me a chance to try it out and then some time to get some recipes together.
But I didn't want to complicate things so I thought I'd see if anyone else wanted to try it with us.
Ok, I have some sites that'll help you and Hummus! and whoever else that decides to try this.

It's good that you guys are going to take a break inbetween. You'll be able to see how your body feels on cooked and on raw.
Are there any raw food restaurants in Chicago or near there?
Green smoothies would be a great thing to incorporate, too. You get benefits from that even if you aren't raw.
I'd be up for the challenge, as well, as I've had a little bit of a hard time staying 100%. It's crazy, too, because my body and mind feel better when I'm 100% but I still slip up occasionally.
I can send you Alissa Cohen's DVDs, too, if you want to check those out. I have her book and her DVDs. They've been a great help.
I'll find some more stuff, if you guys need it. I'm heading back out now.

If those weren't the most challenging days of my week, I would go along. But I work a total of 31 hours in those three days, and I don't have access to quality raw stuffs, and I'm no good at prepping my food ahead of time.
I will eat as raw as I practically can on those days.
Good luck!

Hey Michael,
I'm getting ready to go raw for a month, but I can't do it till I get paid, which is the 15th of Feb.
When I do it, I'll post and see if anyone else wants to do it along with me.
I've hit rock bottom with the finances so any fruit and veg etc. I have now has to last till the 15th. I get paid monthly (hugest bummer ever!)
Most of that will go to my son.
I've been preparing for my raw month by freezing fruit in snack containers and I've made some 'soups', nut milks, avocado sauces and salad dressings that I've frozen too. Unfortunately (but in a good way!), my son loves the banana/balckberry/strawberry frozen snacks and so has eaten most of them.
Got some raw cocoa (with cocoa butter still in it) that I'll be using to make raw snacks etc.
I've done the raw thing before, but I have to prepare quite a bit as my son's dad (who's a stay at home dad) does all the food prep but doesn't help at all with the raw thing. And as I work full time, I have difficulty if I don't prepare well in advance.
GOOD LUCK!

Count me in! Maybe this will help me get back on track again! I have some recipes with pictures in the recipe section of my board here if you want to check them out:

i would like to do this, but i'll have to wait til next week since i'll be staying with a friend until then... i did have raw almond milk today with my cereal...i know it doesn't count. :D
Michael: If I can find the time on Monday and Tuesday to organise myself, I'll join you for the three days. Will let you know on Tuesday evening if I can manage it or not. Thanks for the invitation.
oh, the 8th through the 10th. that may work out for me then.:nana:

I'm in. I will join you all for three days raw!
hm... this actually sounds intriguing.
I'd like to join you, but I think I'll just aim for radically increasing the amount of raw food I eat; I don't think 100% raw is for me. :)

Thanks for all the links, guys! I didn't realize Michael had started this thread until I read another thread mentioning it. I've tried to be raw for pockets of time in the past, but as others have said, it was easy to slip. I think for myself, it's a process to work up to (I have a hard time giving up pita bread). The only raw book I have is that one by Juliano, which, although quite pretty, is somewhat impractical for me.
I've just got one question, though... Do you guys think that it is possible to go raw and be on a weightlifting regime at the same time, and if so, which foods would be best to consume? I can imagine I'd have to be eating ALL DAY and I can't do that. Thanks for the help! :sunny:
Hey, Hummus!
I can think of a handful of raw weightlifters. Alissa Cohen, for one. She's been weightlifting since her teens. She's been raw for about 18-20 years now. There's also Storm and Jinjee. Storm has been raw for something like 30 years now and he's very much into lifting weights.
There are quite a few people on the rawfoodtalk.com board that are weight lifters, as well.
Here are some links I found.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0965353354/002-0329403-1614407?v=glance&n=283155
That book seems to be the best one out there as far as pairing raw foods and bodybuilding/weightlifting.

I will! :D
I don't think 100% raw is for me. :)
me either, but since it's just three days i see it more as a cleanse.

what is a raw food diet?
I dont know if anyone else has already posted some of these links but here are some good ones I like to use for reference:
www.fromsadtoraw.com/RawLinks.htm
www.rawguru.com
I've been thinking about doing something like this myself. Unfortunatly I have a conference thing on most of those days, but will certainly have a go at increasing my raw food intake. I think the healthfood shop near me sells stuff that I can eat.

Here is a site of a raw female fitness competitor: http://www.kathyfeldman.com/
Also, here is the site of a raw dancer: http://www.tonyakay.com/
I want to join the 3 day raw challenge too, I just hope I have enough produce to get me through. But if I run out then I'll just try again next week.

Sure, I'll do it. But this means that the "tuna" salad in the fridge is going to have to be eaten between today and tommorow... Meh, I can do it! Heh...

what is a raw food diet?
It's mainly raw, uncooked food. You can heat food up to a certain temperature, 116-120 degrees is usually what I see mentioned.

Hey I'll join you...I would like to try this raw food thing too! :)
It's mainly raw, uncooked food. You can heat food up to a certain temperature, 116-120 degrees is usually what I see mentioned.
That's actually a little too high, from everything I've read. I don't think there's really a 'magic number', but I don't do anything above 110. It usually stays around 105. I have seen numbers up to 118, though. It can get a tad confusing on that part :dizzy: If you are dehydrating something, you CAN turn it up higher in the beginning to get it started and then turn it back down.
Also, for things like olive oil, etc it has to say "cold pressed", but again, there are only certain brands that are truly raw. And the only raw seasonings out there that I know of are made by Frontier. You can get them online.
Oh, I just saw this yesterday. http://greenchefs.tv/vanessa-sherwood/Parsnip-Fettuccine/  I think I'll make that this week.
