I think we need a "General" forum here.

Anyways what do you all think the origin of vegetarianism is? In other words where do you think vegetarianism comes from or how it started?

I believe that vegetarianism came from India, but this is just IMO.

As for the origin of vegetarianism, it really depends on whom you ask. A Christian (and probably Jew) will tell you that Adam and Eve were vegetarian. Hindus have been vegetarian for centuries. Some of the ancient Greeks were vegetarian. I suspect vegetarianism has been consciously practiced by man since prehistoric times.

Yeah, I've always thought that was cool. Plus, he had a vegetarian school of maths. That is amazing.

That's really interesting. "Oh, I don't eat chicken. I'm a pythagorian."

I'm gonna say where veganism come from. I'm a Christian, and I believe veganism started with Adam and Eve. Probably didn't have that lable on it though. Well, i'm sure it didn't. I'm saying that their probaby wasn't a word for it. :)

Yeah I feel ya man, this forum is very peaceful indeed!!

There is a fantastic book call Vegetarianism: A history, by Colin Spencer that traces vegetarianism through the ages, from gatherers, to pythagoras, tro the hindus, buddhists and Jains, then more modern individuals like Leonardo Da Vinci, George Bernard Shaw, Ghandi to the hippy movement up to the present day. Really good read!

That does sound like fun, but too many people would think it means I like math. ICK! Give me my English Lit book and leave me alone *holds up cross to ward off math teacher*. :D
