Hi,
I wasnt sure where to put this but it seems to be related to physical exercise so I thought in here would get a better response. I seem to keep getting over use injuries and Im not sure why.

So far as I can tell they seem to be coming from walking, not jogging or running or speed or aerobic walking, but just normal walking (although I do go at a good pace, about four miles an hour)

The first was achilles tendonitis on my right tendon this last july that got me into physical therapy. That has gotten better and im more conscience of stretching out my leg muscles every day. Today as I was leaving my apartment for the day I got not even a half a block away when I noticed a sever pain in my shin and had to limp. I ended up taking the bus instead of walking. When I first moved in to this building I got shin splints untill my legs adjusted to the hills. That was about a year and half ago. This seems to have been brought on from just walking. Maybe a bit longer then normal (five and six miles a day instead of three and four) but no hills and no faster then normal. Also I recently got a ministepper, and this may have contributed to it. Im using ibuprofin and resting, not going anywhere at the all the next few days if I can help it at all. That seems to be the best course of action. Then of course starting stretching for that muscle as well as the calf. Seems to be the only thing to be done.

So my question is why do I keep getting these overuse injuries when it seems that Im not doing anything that strenuous at all. Has this happened to anyone else? And how did you stop getting these injuries? Is there maybe some underlying cause or illness that could make this type of injury easier for me end up with? <--thats the one Im most worried about, that something is being missed.

I had wanted to start jogging soon. I really enjoy walking and catch myself wanting to skip and jog a bit but Id like to heal this up before I even thing about that. I was thinking the same thing about jogging when the tendonitis shut down that idea as well. For what its worth, I dont walk funny (in a way that would make these injuries easier for me, we checked that several times during the weeks of physical therapy) I'm 31, and female.

Any thoughts are appriciated. Thanks for reading.

Hmm...even if you don't "walk funny" you should consider your shoes. Have you had your feet professionally evaluated - are they flat, do you have a high arch, anything that might make you supinate or overpronate? And barring this, you should consider the age of your shoes. As a runner I've caught myself being obsessive about the wear and tear on my running shoes while continuing to wear street shoes for years past their prime. You wear your running shoes for a couple of hours a day, tops (albeit while putting the hardest strain on your feet), but your street shoes are on all the time, so they can have as much impact.
