this is a great article to read if you're debating whether to go all the way or not!

Cool article. In a few years I want to go vegan. I am a vegetarian currently though...

A fun and interesting article. I'm not sure I'll ever be ready for veganism, but it was enlightening.

Yep, it IS a very good article, and well-written. Especially this:

...I would have to walk on cement or travel by bike or car. Sound harmless? Think again; cement, car and bike tires all commonly contain animal products, like gelatin. It is simply impossible and potentially counterproductive to avoid 100% of animal products. There are many terrible reasons not to embrace veganism, but I think the worst is this: "I can only go 99% of the way so what's the point?" I think that it is more hypocritical to not pursue one's values at all than to only adhere to them 99% of the time. Ultimately, each vegan has to decide how far he or she wishes to go. That said, please don't call yourself a vegan if you just can't resist an occassional BLT.

Although the last two sentences are a bit confusing to me. He admits that it's almost impossible to avoid all animal products perfectly, acknowledges that it's still far better to avoid 99% of them than to not try to avoid them at all... and then apparently criticizes someone who calls themselves "vegan" but succumbs to the temptation to eat a meat meal occasionally.

Last week I was visiting someone in the hospital (they're a lot better now). The orderly brought beef tips on noodles for the main course, and she couldn't eat it. It would have been thrown out, so I took the beef tips home for my cat (she loved them, but if she hadn't, my neighbors' two dogs would have been happy to dispose of them).

But the noodles I ate had gravy on them. My eating them didn't cause any additional animals to be killed; if it had, I would never have touched them. Still, some might say I shouldn't call myself vegetarian, let alone vegan.
