Do you guys have a live chat thing here? If so, where is it? If not, could you get one?

We did have one for a while last year, but not enough people used it, at least at the same time. I imagine that's the reason why we no longer have it.

Yeah, it was pretty common to be sitting in the room alone :( It would be fun if we had been able to pull it off though.

why not just get a channel on freenode? I think that would make the most sense

We used to have one but it wasn't used enough.

I don't think we gave it enough of a chance. At one time we had a channel on IRC, and there was pretty decent traffic.

Personally, I enjoy live chat, and wish we still had it here.

well IRC stands for "internet relay chat" and is the most accessible form of a chatroom. You need an irc server, and assuming VB doesn't want to host their own we could use irc.freenode.net

I don't know for sure, but I think you can start and moderate a channel on freenode and they don't mind. I would have to look into it more.

But if that happened then people could chat all they wanted to inside the channel #vb or #veggieboards or whatever.

Great, so freenode is our 'man' for what reasons? coz they are free(?) and host just anyone (most-all?) who wants a grab of space for setting up a channel ?

pretty much.

have you used irc before? if not you'll need to download a client.

It'd be nice to have chat back again on VB, but to be honest it's probably not worth Michael's time to set it up again because it'll end up not being used that much, like before.

I think that maybe a lot of people on VB are introverts and they prefer to post rather than chat.

bigdufstuff ~ is a host different from a client or the same thing? I really don't know, shrug.

All I know about (very little) using IRC is by the access I had using Trillian back, when Kurm used his chatroom for us to use and the one other someone later specificly created for VB. Therefore my question: is an IRC client something such as Trillian(?) or do you describe Trillian as just a utility, not directly IRC involved for whatever else its worth? I mean
I would think Trillian as being a sort of client, but maybe not the sort your thinking of. Anyway, help!...hehe.

On the other matter by means of your suggestion, this question also>>
Freenode is a client too is it or just the host site for a clientelle and user?

There was a #veggieboards thing a couple years ago. I don't know if it's still going or how to get to it.

We could just make a forum for chatting, like scheduled chats?

A server is the central place that everyone connects to. For example veggieboards.com is a server. A client is what the end user (us) use to connect to the server with. In our case a web browser.

So for IRC freenode is a server and you need to connect with a client. I use xchat, but you can also use gaim, trillian, mirc, etc.

once you use it connect to the server irc.freenode.net/6667 then join #veggieboards

to join a channel you can type the following into a chat (anything starting with a "/" is a command and won't show up inside the chat)

/join #veggieboards

give it a try. I don't have experience with many windows clients but I may be able to help you, I'll idle in the channel for a while so if you see someone named bigdufstuff that is me

It does not matter to me with the chat and all, but everytime your avatar pops up, it puts a smile on my face. I love it.:D

So nobody joined the channel I made. Either I wasn't clear, or nobody was really that interested. If nobody joins by tomorrow I'll assume everyone lost interest

The slut thread is great for chatting and just random posting, except:

You gotta wait 60 seconds between each post.
You can wait forever for your slut-mates to pop in and post something, and when they do, it's only for 20 seconds at a time. :whip: :stinkeye:

BigDufStuff so this node thing you are talking about. Is it up all the time? Do we access it through a link? If so how do we tell if people are on?

I like live chat too and would use it if we had it.

I'm just a bit busy dufstuff, this is not a priority for me in any sense, but it IS interesting and worthwhile and FUN, etc, IF we get enough people to group around it AND make use of it.....

I don't know when I might try it, it depends on how long you're gonna keep it there, and for me to access, I'm assuming I will in this instance have to use Trillian being thats all I have for IRC access at present, and GAIM I have too, but I've never been able to log into stupid GAIM for me to use it... :brood: Any tips there? I was logging in using yahoo and Yahoo may not be *and may never be* GAIM friendly...so I understand...

it isn't a link, it is an irc channel. So you get an irc client and log into the irc server irc.freenode.net once you're on the server you join the chatroom #veggieboards.

I know most of you haven't used irc before so please let me know specifically what part of the process is difficult to understand. That will help me help you.

I will stay in the chatroom for a long time to keep it open. Say for the next week or so. It doesn't really require any input on my side. So feel free to stop by. If I don't respond right away I am probably away.

So far IAteMyVeggies stopped by and we chatted for a bit, so everything is working.

mIRC is a good shareware client.

Yay, I got it to work in Trillian. Logging in with it is really redundant.

Anyway, one forum I used to chat on had an IRC chatroom, but they had some sort of java or something so that you could access it through a webpage. Anyone know how to do that? It seems like it would be ideal, it wouldn't tax the veggieboards server, but anyone could use it without downloading a chat client.
