hi guys. sigh.
i was just eating a delicious meal of scrambled 'eggs' (aka silken tofu etc.) on toast when my housemate pointed out i eat too much soy.
ive cut back a LOT on soy . but apparently not enough??
i thought 'moderate' meant moderate (im not gonna chuck away one of my favourite food coz of possible danger. POSSIBLE is the key word. but at the same time, i no longer eat bucket loads of the stuff), but apparently you're only meant to eat 20 grams a day. and the ideal is 8. 8 grams?!?! how is that possible?!?! the chunks you buy at the supermarket are two serves of 125 grams?? and i was tempted to eat both serves on toast?! pleeeease tell me its not true.
is 'soy protein' different to the mass of silken tofu? coz it did actually say 8 grams soy protein...maybe a lot of tofu is water weight?! :stinkeye:
so sad. i thought i cut down a lot. but im still way way over and could happily eat all that on toast in ONE MEAL. how do u make a decent omlette etc with EIGHT MEASLY GRAMS?!?!
please reply asap..because...if there IS a diff. , and silken tofu only has like..ONE gram of the stuff im meant to count...im having another serve :shifty: ...

I eat tofu too, but as a rule, if you eat healthy, you take in more protein than you really need on a daily basis. You only need about the weight of 10 pennies worth of protein a day. Anything above that is excess and your body has to process it out which increases the acid in your blood and that washes the calcium out of your bones. That's the main problem with excess protein: it's calcium lost. There are other problems too. It's complicated, but that's the bottom line. Your body DOES NOT store protein.

But don't sweat it. Most veggie people are fine. It's the animal eaters that are in trouble. The average animal eater takes in about 150 grams a day..........when ideally it should be closer to 30-60 depending on your body and genral health.

And if you who eat dairy.....that's a nightmare for your bones. Dairy does not build stong bodies. The dairy industry knows it. They did a study in 1985and they'll never do it again. It showed the subjects in the study who drank milk and ate dairy where all in negative calcium balance because in order to process out the protein, your body has to flush it out and with it goes the calcium in your bones. In the study they had the subjects eat non fat dairy; probably because they didn't want them to die of heart diease from all the fat.

I know I keep saying this, but it's a known mediacl fact. If you do the research, you'll find it. Most vegans have the best bone density. Vegetarians who eat alot of dairy don't fair much better than omni's in bone density test.

It seems like the nutritional value of soy has become quite the political tool these days -- used by pro and anti vegetarians alike! If you listen to some people, soy is a miracle bean. If you listen to others, it's unbelievably hazardous.

Soy is just bean stuff!!!

I drink and eat soy products on a regular basis, and I don't feel that it does an incredible amount of good or bad for me. I do know it displaces all kinds of unhealthy stuff that I could otherwise be eating. And -- most importantly to me, no animal had to die to make it. So I will continue eating and drinking it and won't give it a whole lot of thought. *shrug* :)

How much soy are you eating per day? If all you're consuming is a couple servings of tofu, I really don't think you have anything to worry about. However, if your day includes soy milk, soy sausages, soy dogs, soy burgers, soy crumbles, soy beans, tofu, soy cream cheese, and soy ice cream you are probably overdoing it on certain nutrients and lacking in others.

Anything in excess isn't good. Two, maybe three servings should be sufficient and not overdo it. The concern about getting too much soy comes in terms of developing an allergy to it. Another way to put it into perspective is this: what if you ate everything with apples? Applesauce for breakfast, applejuice as a snack a few times, an apple with lunch, and more applejuice with dinner. That's overdoing it- you're getting a ton of one item.

Just try varying your diet with other sources of protein. If you drink soymilk, also buy rice milk or almond milk to drink on ocassion. Usually I have two cups of soymilk a day. If I'm going to be having a tofu or tempeh based dish, I decrease my soy milk intake to 1 cup. Occasionally I take soy breaks and don't have any at all for a week (usually when I'm too lazy to go to the store or cook something up).

Right before I came on here, I read in a book on nutrition (and it isn't biased for/against a vegetarian diet) that "The Food and Drug Administration has approved a health claim for soy foods that encourages eating at least 1 oz (28 g) of soy protein daily." Health claims range from one extreme to the other. Just listen to your body, and remember to keep soy in moderation.

In regard to soy milk, it is the isoflavones in soy milk which could be damaging to a male if more than 3-4 servings are consumed per week. The isoflavones release estrogen, which is why menopausal women are encouraged to drink soy milk, and that will in turn reduce a male's testosterone. Although, not all soy milk contains a significant source of isoflavones, and also, isoflavones may be responsible for reducing heart disease and breat cancer. Isoflavones are just one additional component to soy protein, and altogether, the best method to consuming soy has already been prescribed: eat it in moderation like any other food.

The FDA has an article regarding soy...

yes. the mass of the tofu (125g) is composed of water(mostly), protein, carbs, fat, etc. If the package says "protein: 8g", then you are consuming 8g of soy protein and not 125g :)

yeah i didn't think...i didn't think i was consuming like a zillion times the recommended...in only half a soy stick thing. Whew. its so delicious.
I've cut down a lot, just because your right...moderation is the key. i more just bumped it up because i just learned a few more soy based recipes:D and also coz money is tight this week and therefore nuts and stuff have been kicked off the list and proteins gotta source from somewhere right?!
hmm. ok.
atterdag- thats what im doing at the moment. if I know im having tofu at dinner i wont have a scramble thing in the morning. but yeah...was just a little nervous..
