This is similar to my cheese with rennet question. I personally stay away from all gelatin. I'm just wondering if there are any vegetarians here that eat gelatin products.

Absolutely not! Only if it is in a medicine that I need to take in lieu of having disastrous health consequences.

No. But I don't really have room to criticize anyone for doing so, because I will eat cheese at restaurants without raising hell to find out if it's rennet-free.

Won't beat you up.:) Thank God I always thought jello was a funky food in the first place as a kid. I remember my mom would put fruit in it till it molded. She said it was healthy.:stinkeye: Even when I was not a veg*n, I never bought it before. Why is that if your are sick they say to drink it hot?:surprised Well maybe old school.

I avoid this product.
If I accidently buy something with it in it, I usually finish off the product.

I am forced to eat gelatin. My mom thinks I do not need to be reading all the labels on foods to make sure I do not eat it and other things. Like, when I am sick I have to eat regular jello, ect.

i will not eat gelatin at all. i always double check candies and other goods to make sure its not in it. you would be surprised, frosted mini wheats contain gelatin...

I won't eat gelatin unless it's in some medicine I'll only be taking for awhile. It seems really gross to me when you think about it. I died when I found out poptarts and mini wheats had gelatin in them. :(

funny, i was in the nurses office on friday since im sick and they only had gelatin caplets and i made the nurse get me a normal one. it took her five minutes to find it but she said she "understood the circumstances"

Yes. I don't much care. Maybe that makes me not a real vegetarian.

Psst! No need to die, unfrosted poptarts are gelatin-free. Can't help you on frosted mini-wheats, though.

No way,
I understand the medication thing. I try not to take medicines much, but sometimes it's unavoidable.
Like a couple of weeks ago I had to get medicine for a persistent severe cough that had lasted about four weeks.
I got a perscription but totally forgot to ask for a perscription for tablets instead of capsules. I went to the pharmacy and realised, then asked for tablets.
They were quite strict and had to ring my doctor to see if they could get the exact same medicine as tablets!
In the end it worked out, but I wonder what I would have done if I couldn't get the tablets and had to go with the capsules, probably gone a way with a cough!
As for gelatine in food, never. But I'm vegan so the chances of products having gelatine in them are lower. We dont tend to have as many cereals stuffed with gelatine as the US does!

That sounds horrible. I will be sick thank you.
I avoid Jell-O in hot, warm, cold or shot form.

Yes, probably.
I just answered the rennet thread without seeing this thread, and I alluded to gelatin in that thread. For me it's the same issue... a byproduct that would otherwise be thrown away with no ethical reasons to avoid it. Many veg*ns avoid gelatin for personal-purity reasons, and that's fine, but you're not saving any animals by avoiding gelatin.

I don't buy things with gelatine in it myself, but I'm not going out of my way to avoid it when people offer me food... because it is in a lot of candies

Same here. I'll avoid buying products with it in, but I'm sure I eat it in desserts and the like when I go out. I'm also guilty of pinching the odd jelly sweet from my stepson which I know contains gelatine. It's not something I beat myself up over. There are many other more worthwhile things I should be striving to achieve than worrying about a bit of gelatine I might have eaten.

When you say "you're not saving any animals by avoiding gelatin," what is your logic? It seems perfectly reasonable to me to assume that the same supply and demand issue, which applies to meat, cheese, etc, applies to gelatin. Can you explain?
I've always avoided gelatin, because the thought of eating boiled skin and tendons is just a little gross to me, and hardly seems vegetarian. It is interesting, though, how much the seductive taste of jello seems to lead many vegetarians astray.

When you say "you're not saving any animals by avoiding gelatin," what is your logic? It seems perfectly reasonable to me to assume that the same supply and demand issue, which applies to meat, cheese, etc, applies to gelatin. Can you explain? Simply put, animals aren't killed to make gelatin. Gelatin is made with the byproducts (scraps) of the meat and dairy industries. You could say that you're subsidizing the meat industry by providing them income from their trash, but it's a small arguement. If meat production goes down, the cost of gelatin goes up and alternatives will be used. As it is now, gelatin is used because it's cheap since it's something that would otherwise simply be thrown away.
I'm not saying anyone should go out and buy Jello, just saying that I don't go out of my way to avoid it since it doesn't save any animals.
