The big day is tomorrow, have the Canadian VBers decided who to vote for?
I'm a staunch New DEmocrat who's praying they get in as official opposition. I think Stephen Harper & the Tories will form a minority gov't.
The Tories are scary, but I hate the Liberals too, with their scandals, Paul Martin's fearmongering & vote-splitting, & their paranoia about guns.

I feel about the same, except that I will vote Green. :)

I have read that the Greens' leader Jim Harris (? I think that's his name) is actually quite conservative & has turned off some more left-leaning enviro folks.
That's why they don't have my vote.
If I were in Quebec I'd vote Bloc- I love Gilles Duceppe!!:sunny:

Check this out:

It will tell you which party best agrees with your personal views on top issues.
(Greens aren't on it though.)

Yeah, but the Greens are the only party that officially opposes the seal hunt. :) So with the NDP and Greens being fairly equal overall for me, since I have met the Green candidate in our riding he will get my vote.

Heh.. I got 100% on the NDP. Could've seen that one coming. Went NDP, Bloc, Liberals and then Conservatives.

I'm of the mind that I'm really between a rock and a hard place, but I'm in Alexa McDonough's riding, so she's pretty well a sure thing anyway. I really don't care for the Conservatives' policies, but they haven't proven themselves to be liars. The problem is that I would probably like them better if they didn't do a lot of what they say they will.

The Liberals' policies I tend to be in agreement with more of the time, but they've just let us all down so many times with not following through with promises and now the sponsorship scandal.. they're not trustworthy, but then I have a hard time believing the other parties are any better. They've just not been given the chance to screw up.

The NDP I'm ok with all around, but they've got a snowball's chance in hell of making up even a minority gov't and I really don't want the conservatives to get in.

Though it seems that nobody's likely to get a majority this time, so whatever they do come up with isn't likely to last that long. If the conservatives win this time, I'll just be hoping for them to foul it up so they'll be kicked out in a year or two.

Ugh. I am really dreading a Harper government. I will vote NDP, as always. While I know that they will basically never be running our country, I do think that they make a great opposition.

Here's hoping!

Seeing Stephen Harper as PM will be tough if it goes that way.

I'm not sure I can vote Liberal this time though, just to help keep Harper out.

NDP here too. We can hope that most of the people who voted liberal last time will go with ndp this time instead.

I'm voting NDP. I hate Steven Harper and almost hate Paul Martin just as much.

I actually really like what the Tories have to say this time around, but you know it's what they aren't saying that matters. The Liberals suck.

I'd vote Green if I were at home where they've actually won a seat before, but where I am living now I'd be the only one. My riding always ends up orange. I figure I'll just add another vote for NDP.

I got 100% for the New Democratic Party (though I'm not Canadian. :D)

Here comes the flames...

Vote Conservative if you want lower taxes and lower wages but full employment
Vote Liberal if you want everything to stay the same
Vote NDP if you want higher taxes, inflation, and high unemployment
Vote Green if you want even higher taxes, even more inflation, and higher unemployment
Vote Marxist-Leninist or Communist if you want to live in Soviet Russia
Vote Marijuana Party if you want to get high
Voter Bloc si vous voulez une Quebec libre

It doesn't matter, as long as you vote.

I'll vote for the NDP.

The Green Party is a little Conservative and also moderate. Those who really oppose the seal hunt are the Animal Alliance Environment Voters Party of Canada, which have an agreement with the NDP.

My Results of that quiz thing:

1. Gilles Duceppe Leader of the Bloc Quebecois 100%
2. Stephen Harper Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada 100%
3. Jack Layton Leader of the New Democratic Party of Canada 78%
4. Paul Martin Leader of Liberal Party of Canada, Prime Minister of Canada 71%

These scores don't make a lot of sense.

I voted Green, though I would have voted Tory were there any chance of them losing in my riding (Calgary-Centre). I voted Green because I would like to see them rise up and replace the Liberals (corrupt) and the NDP (scary). Also, I'm not down with the seal hunt.

See you next election.

Well yes, but even Britain has elections.

I voted green. They won't win a seat this election, but I don't care. If we only voted for parties that could win then we would end up with a 2 party system like the US which is even more stagnant then our system. I am not the biggest fan of Jim Harris, but I am hoping that they have a new leader next election.

I'm ashamed to be Canadian after that pitiful display of anti-democracy. The only good thing is that the NDP got more seats than last time. If more young people voted, the NDP would be the official opposition. It's all the old bible thumping hicks that voted in the conservatives.

I voted Green, and FYI they are not right or left, they are a common sense alternative. Just because Jim Harris used to be in the conservative party doesn't mean the Greens are a conservative party.

The economy is based on the environment, it's unfathomable how people don't understand that.

**** Canadians.

Yup, despite what everyone thinks, the Green party is far from a "left wing" party. It only makes sense that environmental solutions will come from both the left, right and center of the political spectrum.

Also yes, just because the leader is a former PC supporter does not make the party a conservative party. There were many strong environmental supporters in the "old Progressive Conservative" party. Many people change their political affiliation. Winston Churchill switched from the Conservatives to the Liberals, and back to the Conservatives. Also, as far as I know Jim Harris has little to do with the party platform. With the Green Party being a very decentralized party, their platform is developed by thousands of party members through their "living platform" (So if you want to see things improve, then get involved and help develop the next platform.) then voted on by party members. The Green Party has always been very concerned about leaders having too much power, so although things might have changed, as far as I know Jim is basically more of a spokesperson.

But, thanks for voting Green. I know so many people that voted for them, I just can't figure out how they only increased their vote share by 80,000 or so.

Yeah, Superjane doesn't sound happy, but I know an awful lot of people who are just as upset. There is nothing wrong with being passionate when it comes to the future of your country. Nothing is worse than seeing that so many people are indifferent. As someone who can't stand the Conservative party :furious: I was expecting to be a little bit more disappointed with the results than I am.

My riding - Kenora - voted Liberal, my Green Party did worse then I was expecting both locally and nationally.

But, the results, while certainly not good, might not be too bad.

Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party "won" the election, but needs a good 30 votes from members of other parties to pass any bills. So he will probably get the support to put through an ethics package, make the penalty for committing a crime with a gun harsher:gun: (both of those would have come in regardless of who won) reduce the GST from 7% to 6%, decentralize the country, and stike a new fiscal deal with the provinces (both with the help of the bloc), maybe reform the senate a bit, and he might repeal the gun registry but I can't see much else getting support. A free vote to repeal same-sex marriage is unlikely to pass (and the majority of Canadians don't want rights taken away from gay and lesbian couples:rainbow: .). The state of our environment will not improve but, there will not be any support from the other parties to tear up kyoto or remove the current environmental laws:whip: . Certainly if Conservative members try to bring in laws restricting abortion, or try imposing any of their other narrow socially conservative views, that will be the end of their government:flush: . I can't see any other party supporting the so called "day-care" plan of Harper, but who knows.

The Liberal party has hope now that Paul Martin has stepped down. There are some potentially good candidates to replace him, but I suspect that they will pick one of the many duds. Depending on who they pick they could clean up next election. I mean, they ran an awful campaign from start to finish and still managed to win almost as many seats as the Conservatives.

The NDP won the most seats since 1988. Jack Layton is pretty capable and has brought them back from the brink (93 and 97) of destruction. But I have a feeling that this election was a high point for them. If the Liberals nominate a new leader who is from the left or center (instead of the right like Martin) then a lot of people will vote Liberal in the next election to get rid of Harper. I wish it were not true, but the NDP is unlikely to ever do much better than they did this election. So the best hope for the environment is the Green Party.

But, well it just isn't their time yet. Environmental issues was not on the radar screen of Canadians this election (but I think it will be soon), and the environment was not raised even once during the 4 debates. Their are not enough serious Green Party candidates at the moment, there is a lot of party infighting and their campaign seemed disorganized. So while 4.5% of the vote was disappointing, it could have been a lot worse and obviously there is a lot of potential for growth. It will take a little time, but eventually people will start looking for a party with a strong environmental platform, when they do they will see that the Green Party actually has a strong party overall. They will elect a couple members to parliment, if those MPs do well, then who knows. Lets not forget that the Reform Party didn't elect an MP in 1988 (and got only 2.5% of the vote), but come the next election they won 52 seats. The Bloc Quebecois also came out of no where to win a lot of seats. Now, of course, they were regional parties who took advantage of regional anger. But there is always the possibility that soon (as none of the mainstream parties care at all about the environment) Canadians will develop a strong environmental anger and the Green's will be there to capitilize.

Irregardless, Superjane, your vote for the Green Party is effective, it shows every party out there that at least 666,000 voters care about the environment enough to make it there number one priority:up: . So even though a lot of people say that voting green is wasting your vote, it is probably actually the most effective way to vote.
