View Full Version : Lumpy Eyeball: anyone else ever get this?

Yesterday morning when I woke up, I noticed that my left eye was really weepy, but it went away quickly and didn't hurt, so I didn't think much of it. This morning when I woke up, well, I won't go into details but it was really nasty.

I flushed out my eye and was looking in the mirror to see if I could find an eyelash or something that might have caused all this. Then I noticed that on the left side of my eyeball, it was, for lack of a better word, lumpy. Checked my right eye to see if that was normal, but my right eye didn't have that at all. When I look to the very left, I can actually FEEL the lump moving inside my eye socket as my eye moves.

Yes, of course I'm going to go to the doctor. Too afraid of losing my vision not to. But, it's still early in the morning here and it'll be some time before I can even go and during that time, my imagination is going to go wild and freak me out.

So, have any of you ever had this? Is this some kind of temporary no-big-deal thing that will go away easily? *this is what I'm hoping to hear*

If its on your eye lid its probably just a sty, if its on your actual eye I have no idea what it is and I'm almost as interested as you to find out. Hope everything is ok!

i've had a sty before - very painful. but DMZ said it was on the actual eyeball, so i'm stumped.let us know what happens though...good luck - i'm sure it's nothing :)

I think he's right, I had one of those before and had to get it removed.

It's not a sty. I know what a sty looks like because I got them a lot in elementary school. A sty tends to be tiny and almost dot-like. This is an uneven lumpy bump on the white of my eyeball. Well, it used to be the white, but it's really red right now. And it aches. Well, 45 more minutes to go and I can go see a doctor.

It may very well just be an unusual inflammatory response to a minor irritation or infection. Eyebells are more resilient than you might think, so I wouldn't worry too much.

Tesseract, that's kind of what I'm thinking.

The lump is gone. My eye is still red and tender at the corner close to my nose, but the lump is gone. Not going to the doctor after all. It's hard enough to convince them that something is wrong when you have something obviously wrong to show them. I'm not even going to try to convince them that I had a lump this morning when there is no longer any sign of it. *roll eyes*

My theory now is that this is due to my cold. It's a pretty nasty cold involving a LOT of sinus pressure. My eyes had been feeling like they were being pushed out of my head for nearly a week now. Both times, this happened during the night. (waking up with a yucky eye I mean) I sleep on my stomach with my head turned to the side...usually the right side, which would make my left eye on the bottom and the lump was on the left side....maybe this was all just pressure due to the rather impressive amount of mucous my body has been generating lately. I'll try sleeping with my head turned to the left tonight and see what happens. Not sleeping on my stomach is not an option...cannot fall asleep in any other position.

I'll have to check later and see if there are any pharmacies open and see if I can get some kind of eye drops to clean it out/moisten it if I can't manage to make myself cry. Maybe I should watch a PETA video....that should do the trick.

hot compresses, humidifiers, steamy showers, vicks vaporub (to help with your sinus drainage..).. take a decongestant/expectorant about 45 minutes before you plan to go to bed and PROP YOURSELF UP

hot compresses? Where? I mean, where do I put them? I already run my humidifier 24/7 and take a very steamy shower every morning. I don't have any decongestant/expectorants other than a nyquil off the grey market. I don't want to ask at the pharmacy because I don't trust what they would give me. Koreans go to the HOSPITAL when they have a cold and come back with little packets of pills and end up taking between 5-8 pills three times a day...and who knows what they are? *shudder* Vicks vapor rub...I think I still have a tube of that I brought back with me from the last trip....probably expired, but it's not like I'm ingesting it, so it couldnt' hurt to try. I think I'll slather that on myself and take a nap now.

I can't prop myself up. I'll never sleep that way. I seriously have to be on my stomach. When I injured my knee and was in a groin to toe cast, I was not supposed to put any pressure on my knee, so I had to lie flat on my back. I never fell asleep the first night. Halfways through the second night, in tears from exhaustion, I figured out a way to prop my leg so that I could lie on my stomach and was out within seconds. I don't know why I'm like this...but I am. Even when I take medicine that causes extreme drowsiness, I won't fall asleep unless I'm on my stomach. Annoying as heck!

oh, a hot compress: place it on your eyes/sinuses (if the ones above your eyes hurt more, put it there..), you can make more than one, and leave the compress there until it cools. remove it, wait 10-15 minutes, and do another one..

i suffer from frequent sinus infections and i normally do this while waiting for the decongestant or pain reliever to start working. i also have been known to sit with a towel over my head over a BIG CUP of steaming hot tea... vicks vaporub as icky as it is really helps open things up when you don't have access to a decongestant....

good luck

About vick's vapor rub....for everyone out there. If, in desperation, you smear some just under your nose, do NOT then blow your nose when it loosens things up in you are the kind to use your tissue to poke up in your nose a bit to clean it all out. You WILL push some of that vapor rub into your nose. It will sting and burn like nothing you want to imagine (especially if nose is already sore from a week's worth of blowing). However, it will also clear you right up very nicely. :)

I'm not sure that the hot compresses would work for me, Libellula, as my greatest desire right now is to stick my head in a bucket of icy slushy water. Hot...I just feel too hot...my head I mean. I keep entertaining the idea of shaving my head to relieve some of the hot feeling, but I know how much I'd SERIOUSLY regret that later. :D

When I was a teen, I once had an allergy attack (brought on by seasonal allergies) and, without realizing it, I rubbed my right eye until it was swollen. It felt like the whole eyeball had changed shape, sort of an oval pulled out towards the outer corner of my eye.

I took an antihistamine, rinsed my eyes thoroughly, and just let them rest for a while. Overnight, the swelling disappeared.

So, I'm thinking that, as you surmised, your excessive sinus pressure put a lot of pressure on your eyeball, and it swelled, and that's why it felt lumpy. I wouldn't be too worried about it, unless you notice any vision changes (stars, black dots, blurriness) or it happens again soon. If it does, then I'd run to the local doctor - I know blunt force trauma to the eye can damage the retina, so excessive pressure over the long term could probably do the same.

Also, when you have a cold or other sinus problem, it is possible for your tear ducts to get blocked, which leads to excessive teariness. (Normally, the tears we produce to keep our eyes moist drain internally into the nasal cavity; if that passageway gets blocked, then everything has to come out externally.) I had this problem recently, and it eventually went away on its own, but I'm sure a good nasal wash (saline spray up the nose, or a neti pot) would have helped speed up the natural breakdown of the blockage. Excessive teariness could cause you to rub your eyes more - trying to wipe away the tears - which could cause you to rub your eye and make it swell.

So, barring any problems with your eye health, and assuming that this is all related to your sinus problem, I don't think you have anything to panic about. (Unless, as I said, it happens again - then get to a doctor.) Just try to do things (like the suggestions made by others) to decongest, and maybe rinse out your nasal cavity if you're having too many tears or too much pressure.

Still have a cold, still have a very hard time speaking without a great deal of pain, but I no longer have a lumpy eye. Today, all the red is finally gone as well. THANK GOODNESS because I had so many little kids coming up to me and pointing to ask what was wrong. If I didn't wear glasses, I'd have had little fingers poking that eye all day long. hahahahahaha~

Thanks for all your help and encouragement everyone! :D
