View Full Version : American Meat Inst. and Heifer International
Ann Veneman went from the American Meat Institute to the USDA
to her present position as head of UNICEF.
She is able to help professional kidnappers of baby
animals, who cage them and send them overseas to their slavery
and slaughter, programs such as Heifer International
and RSWR in Richmond Ind. Many churches support the wolf in sheep's
clothing Heifer program. The little ones are terrified on their journeys,
ripped away from their families.
Such programs are one of many factors in the drought of Africa..
since cow grazing in semi desert areas is responsible for
advancing desertification. Every tree evaporates an average
42 gallons of moisture daily, which becomes mist and then
clouds and finally rain. With the grazing of large herds, vulnerable
sapling trees are chomped or stomped.
In addition, John Bolton, former meat lobbyist, is
now representing the voice of the slaughterhouse at the UN
The UN's structure is racist, with 4 predominantly white nations
with relatively small populations
having veto power over what the rest of the world decides.
No African nation, no Arab, no S American nation is on the
Security Council's permanent body. India has 1 billion people
and the UK around 60 million, yet the latter has veto power over
what India decides. The colonialist capitalist foot of Britain's billionaires
is still treading heavily around the world.

Um, looking at their site, I don't think HI cages any animals here for shipments overseas.

Um, droughts occurred in Africa long before HI came on the scene. I don't think they provide, or have provided, enough animals to blame any climate changes in Africa on them.

Those who pay the piper get to call the tune.
There's no sense giving animals to people unless they are also taught how to keep animals without damaging the land. It's perfectly possible to raise animals without overgrazing, etc, if people will just learn the right techniques. Permaculture inlcudes some methods which can aid this, and Ecology Action's Biointensive practices can also be taught. In fact Ecology Action has training programs in Africa. If they could work with Heifer, it would be beneficial.
Dear Ludi, I respect your point of view
but disagree with it.
Animal products yields a few thousand lbs per acre... as compared
to 450,000 lbs for fruit from centenarian trees..
they cause disease, energy waste,
and most importantly, animal products involve slavery for animals
every egg is 300 mg of cholesterol
whether or not the chicken is caged in a farm or a henhouse
I doubt you disagree with my point of view, because you don't know what it is.
I don't advocate raising animals, merely mention that they can be raised in a way that isn't destructive to the land.
Raising plants for food is far less labor-intensive and resource intensive than raising animals, and uses less land to obtain the same amount of calories and nutrients.

In arid areas where little grows, all calories help and matter.
Ever think the peeps in those places who end up better off after they receive help from HI know more about this than you do? Me thinks so.

In arid areas, like you say, little will grow, and what does grow may not be edible by humans. Animals such as goats can eat brush or coarse grass and make a product which can keep a person alive.
Ideally humans wouldn't live in places which can't support them, but as it stands, people do live in these areas. Efforts should be made to help them live in a way which doesn't make their situation worse.
Richard St Barbe Baker planted millions of trees. David Kidd
has planted over 1 million trees.
Irrigation projects along with tree planting can bring back the desert

Kenya: People and Hippos Dying From Drought

Nairobi - Scores of river-dwelling hippos are dying in Kenya's famed Maasai Mara National Reserve due to a searing drought that threatens the country's renowned wildlife and has put millions of people across east Africa at risk of famine, said officials on Monday.
As government and relief agencies scramble to save human populations from starvation, wildlife authorities said between 60 and 80 hippos have died in the reserve over the past six weeks amid increased drought-related competition for scarce food and water.
Masanobu Fukuoka has also promoted methods of replanting the deserts of Africa.

He mentions Daikon radishes, which are of course not native to Africa, but grow well in drought conditions. I've learned this about Daikon on my own, they were among the only plants which survived the droughty Fall here in the unwatered parts of my garden.
