View Full Version : Question about BANNED members
FlareKat

I am really curious, I searched but I couldn't find much on members being banned.
Maybe I am just noticing now.... but it sure seems alot of people are banned. Are they really banned, or is it just their chosen avator phrase? If the former, how can they still be online?
Not a life or death issue, of course.... however curiousity did kill the cat....and I am some curious!!!
Thanks!

If it says "banned" under a user's name, then yes, they are banned. Bans happen for different reasons. Some people ask for a temporary ban because they feel they are spending too much time here, and can't manage to stay away without the help of a ban. Some are banned for trolling or spamming, or other violations of the terms of service.

If they're really banned and not just pretending, the PM link doesn't work. I think. But I think you can still get on and read the forums, so if you were doing that, it would show you as online even though you're banned from posting.
Getting banned seems to be a popular activity around here lately.

Thanks borealis!!
(sshhhh, please don't tell my husband about the voluntary ban!! he is beginning to think I have a VB problem!)

And some people are banned for no apparent reason.
^^ do you mean due to a glitch in the software or because you couldn't see the sense in the banning?

People are banned for many reasons. Sometimes it's their choice, sometimes it's ours. Sometimes it's temporary, sometimes it's permanent.
Unless someone is an obvious troll I try to give them the benefit of the doubt. Sometimes I'll even put up with their crap for years. Rarely though is it ever one person's decision to ban a regular member. Usually by the time it gets to that point all of the mods agree it should have been done long ago.
When a banned person is shown as being online it's usually because they're trying to access the board but all they're seeing is the "you do not have permission to view this page" message.

Yeah but some people stir up trouble here and then brag about it elsewhere. Even to the point that they will admit they deserve to be banned. Then when it happens they're a victim, they have no idea what they've done to deserve it. It's a shame really.

LMAO!! Honestly that is funny. I am on a few other message boards and that statement is the one that is said over and over. People on the whole do not want to take accountability for their actions. Usually the banned person will say it's the Mod who is an A$$ for banning them and not "them" who was a jerk.

And you know what? Sometimes they are right as well.

Sometimes they are but ultimately it doesn't matter.
That's shame, because it used to matter.

I can't specifically speak about this board and its' banned members as I have not been here long enough but on another board I was on I can honestly say that out of all the people who were banned, there was 1, possibly 2 whose banning was questionable. The rest got what they deserved.

I agree with Tame because each person does matter on a board.

People don't matter to me when they are intentionally disrupting things and then bragging about it. It's not fair to me, the moderators, the people who are being made fun of, or anyone else that wants a nice place to hang out. The only people it should matter to are those who feel threatened that something is actually being done about it.

Then your statements are not relevant.
Sometimes they are but ultimately it doesn't matter.
I can understand that. I may have missed that, not sure.
I guess that would hold more weight with me if you didn't have a mod who posted on their personal blog a desire to ban certain members, specifically some who that mod knew were not being intentionally disruptive.

You of all people should know that I don't just ban people on a whim.
I don't believe I said you did.
And I have not taken sides on this matter here or the other place, and I am not going to do so. In the end, it is just a message board banning, and not really that important.
In fact, I will say that as far as I am concerned, the only judgements I trust from the admin/mod side come from you and a couple of mods. Based on some PMs I have received over the past year, there are certain people with an agenda, and they are becoming more and more open about it.
Michael

Ok, we can agree on that then. For the most part by the time a regular member is banned the mods agree on it. Not completely free of bias but about as close as we can expect to get.

It's good to know that you are fair Michael. I'm not sure who Tame is talking about, but I guess the follow up question would be ....
How did these people become mods, if they can't be impartial?
