View Full Version : Help with a grociery list?

Now, I wouldn't be surprised if I spelled grociery wrong...damn I'm horrable at spelling.
Anyway! On to the point!
I'm going to hit up Bulk Barn tomorrow (has lots of grains and all of that sort of stuff 'in bulk', so it's cheaper *a good thing for a student) and maybe the produce depot (a whole store -just for veggies!- :pibo: )
And I'm wondering what sort of stuff i should get, like what kinds of grains and such. I'm hoping that they have bulger wheat.
The reason why I ask? Well, I've noticed that a lot of my cooking centers on things like tofu (and where can I get temph btw?) and ground veggie 'meats'. I know my dad made a sheapherds pie for me w/ bulger wheat, and it was aweseome...I just have to get some now.
So, help me make a grociery list! I love to cook, so thats no problem. I've been Veggie for about 9 months now, but I'm just trying to get out of a rut and buying 'the same things over, again and again'.
Help!?
Thanks! :D
p.s: After reading the 'soy debate', I'm wondering if I should try other 'milks' any suggestions? And sience soymilk is fortified w/ a bunch of stuff, vit. D, Calcium, etc, where else can I get these things? are things like rice milk fortified as well? Thanks :)

I used to hit up the bulk barn almost daily. It's great for dried beans, and usually lots of different rice, and pastas made with different grains. Also nuts.
Here's what I'd recommend:
Dry split peas (for soups, making veggie-burgers, exc)
Dry lentils (pureed red lentils are suppossed to be really good for thickening soups, stews, and sauces, though I haven't tried that yet)
Brown rice (great in bean burrittoes and of course as a side-dish)
Flax (grind up a few tsp and add to oatmeal or mix with just a little water, beat with a fork, and add to smoothies or as egg-subsitutes in baking. Great source of Omega-3 fatty acids).
Beans of all kinds.

Mmmm, sounds good, thank you! :)
And red lentels are good for adding to soups and stuff. I get things like that at the grociery store, but I'm thinking that bulkbarn may be a better idea, cheaper too!
Thanks!

I don't know where the Bulk Barn is. I don't have anything like that within a 2 hour drive. Anyway, I am still able to find everything that you mentioned at my regular grocery store. It might be because we have a large Asian and El Salvadoran population in the area. I shop at grocery stores like Martin's, Giant and Shoppers Food Warehouse.
Tempeh is in the produce department in an open refrigerated case. It's the same place they sell the Nasoya Tofu and Yves products.
Grains : I love to get long-grain Brown rice. Tonight I bought Brown Basmati rice (not sure what the difference is yet)
Greens: Rabid_child posted some really good Kale recipes - so I bought Kale for the first time tonight. Usually I just get Spinach, Romaine, alfalfa sprouts, green pepper, cucumber and broccoli.
Legumes: Pick up a large bag of Lentils (yummy) and Kidney beans (:lick:) They are perfect for so many meals. If you can buy some cheap, but airtight containers to transfer them into. Nothing like a hole in the bag or bugs getting attracted to them.
Almond milk and rice milk are of course other possibilities instead of soy.
There are even recipes to make your own.

Check out the "I wanna see your grocery list" thread in the Food Discussion forum... a bunch of us have listed the average weekly lists of groceries we buy... it may be helpful to see some "typical" lists from other people...
Just an idea. You've got some good ideas here too....

Oh I love bulk barn. if you're a student, check out when their student discount day is (where I live they have one on wednesdays!)
Anyway, I would recommend brown rice, chickpeas, nuts and trail mixes, and different beans. Also just walk around and see whta they have. It's a great place for trying new things. You can experiment by getting a scoop or two of something different for a fairly cheap price.
Oh yeah, and they have falafel mix, tabouli mix, vegetable soup stock and spices, which I always buy from there.

Thank you everyone for your help :sunny:
I ended up w/ some mixed beans, bulgar wheat, some natural peanutbutter (just peanuts, no hydrogenated crap) both the falafel mix and tabouli mix, split peas, lentels...well, thats what I can remember anyway :p Oh, and Starblossom, the student day here is Wednesday too! But this Wednesday I'm going out of town to visit my bf :nana: so, no time for bulk barn ;)
I still can't find Tempeh though :( Anyone live in the Ottawa-area that knows some stores that sell it?
Many thanks!
