Can anyone tell me exactly where to locate this? I live in a very small town and have not had any luck so far. The only thing I can find at my local grocery store is the active yeast used for baking bread, etc. Is this the same thing???

Not the same thing. There is a chance your store might not carry it. Did you try asking any of the employees. If you have a health food store, or natural food store, they are likely to have it. Keep looking the stuff is great!

We have a GNC here. I wonder if they might have it? Is it like a powder or what?

It's like flakes. You can see a picture on the link I provided.
Isn't GNC a supplements place? I'm not sure it'd be at a place like that, but I've never checked.

it is sort of a like a powder, but like meatless said it is really flakes. It is bright yellow.

Small towns may not have it. I live in a fairly LARGE town that has five major grocery chain stores but no nutritional yeast... Since it lasts for a long while, I get it when I venture all the way to Whole Foods every three or four months...
If it were in a grocery/health food store, what section would it be in?
I've never used nutritional yeast, but I'm interesting in giving it a try.

I found it in with the supplements and vitamins. And I actually found it there by accident. I didnt know to even look there. You might try looking there. Or if you dont have a CC to order online you store might take special requests.

If it is a small health food store ask an employee, they'll know exactly what you're talking about.
The stuff I buy is in the bulk section, but that is because it is in a bulk bin. It also comes in a container, for which case I'm not sure what section it is in. The best thing to do is ask an employee.

I can't find nutritional yeast anywhere in the town i live in. I've even asked the people who work at the only health foods store we have here (very small though) and they said they don't carry it. My fiance's mom sends it to us. :P She lives near Kansas City where Wild Oats Market is and they keep it in plastic tubs near the flour.

At my HFS it's in the bulk section, and at the major grocery store it's in the natural foods section in a tub-like thing. Although, I've never bought it from the grocery store since it's not identified as Red Star (it just says Nutritional Yeast).

What is red star?
Traditionally, vegans have used a particular Red Star nutritional yeast (I forget the number) specifically cultured for high Vitamin B-12 content. I don't know how often vegans still seek it out. :guitar:

Red Star Vegetarian Support formula is teh only way to go. One can also order it from the FARM in Sumertown Tennessee.

It can come as flakes or a powder. I do prefer the flakes, but the powder is still useful, especially if it's all you can get. Just use half as much if you get the powder.

I buy mine from the bulk bins, because it's cheaper. But it specifically lists the nutritional profile (including the crazy amounts of B12) on the bin. My local HFS also sells Red Star in a container, but it's way too pricey.

I've only seen the Red Star brand here. I had it for a long time and was afraid to try it because I thought it would be gross. But when I finally did try it, I now use it on practically everything! I love it.
