View Full Version : New vegan seeks help
I did a research project on animal rights and couldn't take it anymore, I went vegan!
What I would love is some help on those weird huge complicated words in the ingredients list that really means "stomach lining from a baby calf."
What are some common ones I should watch out for? Thanks!

I don't label-read to quite that level of technicality, but aside from the common non-vegetarian ingredients listed here (http://www.veggieboards.com/boards/showpost.php?p=1126277&postcount=79), there's vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), which I think is usually derived from sheep's wool. One place to watch out for it is 8th Continent soymilk. Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is plant-based.

I think the one that you mean is rennet, but you probably knew that already.

Congratulations! You have made a noble decision.
The PETA list is good. I don't want to give you a list of stuff to avoid because invaribaly, you are going to make MANY mistakes as you learn what is ok.
For now, I would avoid the biggies. Worry about the "derived from" as you learn more about it. Just try to get used to not eating the animal products first then worry about all the by products. It's amazing how many things have animal products in them? Did you know that camera film is off limits?
Thanks you guys <33
camera film? :stinkeye:
Digital all the way.

If you get right down to the nitty gritty, you can't own a car, either. The tires aren't vegan. The paint isn't vegan.
Just depends on how much you want to cut out every bit of animal ingredients from your life. If you want to just make sure your diet is vegan to begin with and work on the other stuff later (with obvious choices like no leather or wool in your immediate future)...I always think that's the way to go. But there are others who one day, say they're absolutely vegan and cut out everything then and there and have no problem doing it.

Oh wow car! That's extreme. Yeah, I think I'll just start on the vegan diet.... Well I already don't wear any animal stuff, so that's good :D
Do you live in the United States? Here, every single freaking thing we buy has a 1-800 number you can call to ask questions. The people on the other end have always been really helpful when I've asked "are there any animal-derived ingrediants in your __________________." If you have a cell phone and can shop during "normal business hours", bring the phone to the store and call the company from there.
Also, most organic-food companies are sensative to veganism and many list what products are vegan in the FAQ section of thier websites. And then there's PETA's shopping guide...a real lifesaver.

Please consider posting in a darker colour. Bright baby blue is not kind on the eyes of us old folks.
that glue holding your neat appliance together may contain animal parts...
ok thats extreme, but first, just remember, even tho you THINK it should be vegan, it still may not be... (recently found out that peanuts and tortilla chips will sneak in the yucks too, nothings safe :( ) so get used to always reading the label on everything, it only takes a second :)
bread too, i would have never thought, but this really is a downer... check your breads always.
and also congrats on the move! i know when i first stumbled upon an article on veg*nism years ago, i knew i had to go veg... it made a big difference and i severely limited my meat, knowing that id soon be permanent veg. took a couple years to finally wean myself off tho... considering where i came from... i felt like i was just born as a new person
that first trip to the supermarket after i finally read and thought about the animals, i was in a tripped out daze, on a rush, realizing who i truely wanted to be, looking at everyone else like "you havent figured it out yet?"... man going veg is such a rush! :)
