SINGAPORE (AFP) - Singapore has bred Southeast Asia's first captive giant anteater, local zoo authorities said.
The mammal, which feeds on ants and termites, was born in November at the Singapore Night Safari, said Wildlife Reserves Singapore.
"This significant birth is Southeast Asia's first captive anteater birth," the parent company of the Singapore Night Safari said in a statement.
"Captive breeding of threatened species is one of Night Safari's focus areas, in line with its mission to promote bio-diversity," it said.
The anteater is classified by the UN's Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) as a species not necessarily threatened to extinction but whose trade should be controlled.
The giant anteater is the largest of the anteater species and is usually found in the tropical forests and grassy plains of central and south America.
