FORT SUMNER, New Mexico (AP) -- A mouse got its revenge against a homeowner who tried to dispose of it in a pile of burning leaves. The blazing creature ran back to the man's house and set it on fire.

Luciano Mares, 81, of Fort Sumner said he caught the mouse inside his house and wanted to get rid of it.

"I had some leaves burning outside, so I threw it in the fire, and the mouse was on fire and ran back at the house," Mares said from a motel room Saturday.

Village Fire Chief Juan Chavez said the burning mouse ran to just beneath a window, and the flames spread up from there and throughout the house.

No was hurt inside, but the home and everything in it was destroyed.

Unseasonably dry and windy conditions have charred more than 53,000 acres and destroyed 10 homes in southeastern New Mexico in recent weeks.

"I've seen numerous house fires," village Fire Department Capt. Jim Lyssy said, "but nothing as unique as this one."

What a horrible way to kill a mouse. I wouldn't even kill a roach by setting it on fire. That's just cruel.

I resisted the temptation to say mouse 1 human nil, because I just don't believe the story, I suspect it was made up as part of an insurance claim, to mitigate the fact that he had a bonfire burning close to his house.

Well, I imagine if it is true, the mouse wound up dead, while the human is still alive, so that would be more like mouse nil, human 0.5.

I hope it's not a true story - but if it is, that a$$hole got what he deserved.

I just read this story on another site. It can be summed up in one word: karma.

Ok, I try never to advocate tragedies to humans, but in this case I'm gonna have to give a big fat "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!" to the imbecile who set fire to a mouse. It's almost like the universe had a little misunderstanding... mouse, house.. you know... it was an honest mistake :)

Now it seems this story isn't true: http://www.snopes.com/media/notnews/mousefire.asp

What kind of an idiot is burning leaves in a non-fire safe area during a drought anyway?

I don't think he deserved to have all his possessions burned to the ground! Although that is a horrible way to kill a mouse, maybe the guy was just an idiot.

Like a poster said, this story is not true.

Why do we always believe the rubbish we read in newspapers?
